What I mean is, is it common for RN students to gain paying positions in hospitals after a few courses?

I do not know if it is common but I have worked full time throughout my program. I only have a semester and a half left. It has not been easy and I have cut out the majority of my social life but it is doable.

I have worked part-time all through school. If they have an issue about me working I just don't tell them I'm working.

I think its very common. Most of my graduating class held jobs as nurses aides in the hospital setting. After 1 semester of clinicals most hospitals would hire a nursing student for a tech/aide position. I found it to be very helpful, which was a good plus.

After 1 semester, ASN students here are eligible to join the Student nurse pool, the commitment is an 8 hour shift a month. They act as nurse techs/patient care assistants. Maybe there is a hospital close to you with a similar program?
