RN student sit for LPN boards

U.S.A. Florida

Published

I am looking to sit for the PN boards in Florida. I know it has been done after third semester (psych, pharm, obstetrics, peds, fundamentals, & some med-surg). I will be done with my third semester in December. If anyone has information about it, please let me know.

Several others and I did this at my school. You download (or obtain by other means) the PN application to test from the FL board website. Follow the directions in filling it out and take the necessary document to your school to have your department head certify your education. They will then forward this form or the entire app to the Board and you're on your way. Specific directions can be obtained from your nursing department and the FL Board. Good luck.

SO...you can challenge the LPN state exam after 2 semesters of RN nursing school?

Dont you need formal LPN training?...

you don't need LPN training to get an LPN license after you have passed the first few semesters of nursing school.

I remember our instructors told us it was after completing medsurg 1,2 peds, ob, and psych........ which in our program that is all the way towards the end, so most of us didn't do it.

there were a few people who had to do that because they failed the last medsurg class and had to get their LPN license before starting back again in the program.

It depends on your state. NY doesn't permit it.

I contacted the Florida board of nursing and they said it can be done. But my school doesn't want us to sit for the boards anymore. They made us sign a form saying we wouldn't at the beginning of this semester. However, the form said that the law was changed which isn't true since I just talked to them last week.

Just because your state's board allows this practice does not mean that your school has to cooperate. My school used to allow the students to take the RN exam after 75% of the program was completed under the policy that the equivalent of an ASN program had been successfully completed (this was a BSN program). The school stopped signing off on this because they said students were not taking it seriously and were giving the school a bad name when they failed the test. However, they still allowed the students to take the PN exam instead of the RN exam. You can't go through this process unless your school follows the policy of allowing students to do this. There are some schools that require students to complete the entire program before taking any exam.

I also checked previously with the BON and was told yes I could do that. I brought the issue to the Director and was told no, they wouldnt allow me to do that. It would have been nice in these hard economic times to have made more money, since I have only worked weekends for the past 2 1/2 years. Oh well. Now, hopefully I will be taking the NCLEX-RN in December or January at the latest.
