RN school wait lists in BC

Published

First off, hello everyone. I'm new to the forum and stumbled on it while spending hours trying to research my alternatives.

I'm in Vancouver, BC (permanent resident) planning to go for my RN. I'm a mature student with 19 credit hours from a US university, but most of those credits are liberal arts, so I'm not sure what will really count except for the math and English. I know I'll have to take the A&Ps and Psychs- biology was much more than 5 years ago, but I did make an A! lol

When I first started looking, I found that VCC has a relatively new RN BSN program and I spoke to the academic advisers who told me that there was no wait list. I got approved for my student loan, requested all my transcripts and registered as a student. Today (only a week later) I spoke with a different adviser who informed me that not only is there a wait list, but that there are 49 students on it and that they will only be taking 24. VCC only has a fall intake so she told me that if I'm "lucky" I could get in the class of 2012 but likely 2013! ack. I suppose the only positive there is that they are a first come, first serve school so I will eventually move up the list for sure.

In the meantime, the adviser suggested I apply to multiple schools in the Lower Mainland, and choose one to attend for prerequisites while biding my time, hoping for one of them to eventually send me an acceptance. I'm sure many of you are in the same boat. I applied to Douglas and will probably actually attend there because it is much closer to home than VCC, plus they do two intakes per year so that's a plus. Will anyone be attending the Douglas psych or A&P for summer 2011? Would be nice to know someone going in.

So I guess the purpose of my post is to first make contact with anyone else currently waiting out their time, and also to compare any up-to-date info you have on wait lists. As far as Douglas' preferential placement goes, with a max number of points at 14, what is a "good" number of points to have to be competitive? I'm thinking I will have around 8. >

Thanks for reading!

Smiley - You're always the first to inform me of the new stuff lol so thanks! Looking at the timetable now, 9 courses. Wow. Will you be working or just doing school??

Where are you seeing the times?

baha ...well I am a little obsessed :) its just that I have to organize financing, child care, etc so I like to make sure everything is in order.... I will be working part time as student loans aren't nearly enough to support my daughter and I, AND pay bills, AND AND AND :) it's ok, I always manage. If you log into mybcit then click on my courses then select winter 2012 it actually lists all of the courses and some don't start until mid semester, some are online and so I think it looks a lot scarier than it is. also if you click on one of the courses, it will take you to the course homepage, on the left you can select members, it lists everyone in the program (we haven't been split up yet) Now instead of applicatin status, I am going to be checking "course schedules" lol....it just never ends. How about you? will you be working? Are you home from your holiday?

Yeah 9 courses is quite a bit. Where do you find out which ones start mid semester, etc? I haven't decided yet if I am going to work while in the program. I should, but with my financial aid I should be able to get by... But I work in Kitsilano so the commute takes a while and I'm trying to figure out if it's worth it. Granted if I don't work, i'm going to be very, very broke lol. I got home yesterday! Just sent off all my financial aid stuff this morning and am going to start with the immunization stuff next! PS good for you! Clearly your organization skills are gonna help big time.

The times "which are not accurate" are listed under course schedules which is in the same section as check app status on right side of main page. you have to agree to the terms and then it will take you to your current schedule....not sure what is says if you are not currently enrolled in anything else at BCIT, but it should show this week or give you the option to scroll through each week. Once you hit Jan 9, the classes come up. As jasn pointed out, these are not final times as many classes are conflicting still etc...

And under "my courses" beside each course it says when it starts :) welcome home!

Ohhh okay I see. It takes me straight to Jan 9th. Well even if it's not accurate it's something!!

I know! sooo exciting :) if you keep scrolling you can see how some just start mid term and on the bottom it says some are internet.

Very! Are you gonna try and get cheaper textbooks rather than purchase them at the bookstore?

For sure! Amazon.com. Saves hundreds!

Will we get the book list at orientation???

Hey guys, I'm wondering if anyone has any information on the waitlist? If anyone does I would love to hear it!! I waited so long to get put on there so I'm just crossing my fingers and still praying that I get a seat!
