in rn refresher course now

I am hoping to return as an RN on a medical surgical floor in a rural hospital soon, but feel the typical lack of confidence right now. Has anybody got a word for me? I am excited and then sometimes I think I must be crazy! I would love to hear a success story from somebody who has been out about as long as I have and your new job in the hospital. I know I can do it, but hope the hospital, should I be hired, will be patient with me and provide the orientation I need to feel confident.

Hello returning nurses,

Stay encouraged. You can return successfully. The first step is a refresher program that includes clincals. If you are returning to acute care you need an internship or mentoring type program also. There are many opportunites for nurses re-entering practice. The hosptials, outpatient surgery, outpatient dialysis, infusion care,and many more. I work with a Nurse Refresher Program. I have been teaching with this program over 8 years and we have had great success in assistiing nurses back into competent and confident care.

And if you work at the one I went to (Houston area) YOU ARE TOPS It was an asset, I have not looked back.

It is always important to solidify your foundation, and take it from there....... :heartbeat

Hello, I am also returning to nursing after a 5 year leave. I worked in our field for just short of 24 years prior to leaving. I just started a refresher course here in Washington state . Since I am in a similar situation as you, I do not have a current success story to motivate you......YET!!

Here is why I am returning. It is two fold. I tried to do my own business in photography doing freelance. It was/is very difficult as I had no experience in the business world. The photography is wonderful but running it as a business and trying to make a living wage is another story. Now, with the economy being as it is, I cannot survive on it. So, I will go back to my nursing career with a good income and do my photography on the side.....plenty of time for both.

I am so grateful I have nursing to go back to as it is one of the top 5 most secure careers in the USA. I see many people that have been in a career for many years now trying to start their lives over and cannot decide what to do for a living.

Plus, I simply miss nursing and am excited to go back to a career that is in such demand. All my experience is in ICU/CCU which has always been an area that needs nurses. These are the things that motivate me to go back to nursing.......the very best of luck to all you that are returning to nursing! :0)

Texasnurseeducator - I am considering going formy RN refresher course. I summer in Wyoming and winter in Texas. I did not find the person that I talked to at TBON very helpful.

In their information, it says that the first part of refresher is up to the individual assessing the 'student'. There can be as much or as little as the instructor feels that the person needs.

So far, all I have seen are courses that are an already defined time frame.

Are there courses that are given by individual people?

I understand that the minimum of clinical is 80 hours. That is fine, but I have a question on which areas are worked in. Can you do your clinical in the area where you will be working? I will only be working in specific areas due to an injury that has left me disabled.

What can you tell me, please.

The Texas minimum is 80 hours. The time increases depending on your individual situation and needs. We try and do clincials in the area requested as much as allowed by the facilitues. Also, Texas BON allows for a special license with no clinicals if you are not doing patient care. It is a limited license for nurses that are disabled and not able to do clincials. What area are you planning to work in? Sorry, the editors will not let us give e-mails,websites, or phone #s. I believe you may instant message another person by clicking on their name. If you look on MSN or google for a nurse refresher program in Texas we will come up along with other options. I think they do this so this does not become a maketing forum as it should not be. PHES is also on the Board of Nursing website under Nursing education, courses that meet stipulations along with other programs in our state.

I can not concur more!!!! I did the PHES, it was wonderful, learned a lot, and got great direction!!!!!!!:heartbeat

We offer the program by Correspondence as well as in class. You could come to class for skills labs and do the rest of the work by correspondence. You are not just alone with a book. You have instructor support and phone conferences set up with each module. We have clinicals in various parts of town. What area of nursing are you planning to return to? How long have you been out and what areas did you work in? Let me know and I will see what other suggestions I can come up with.

I can't seem to find anything on the Texas BON website. I did find PHES online. It is still an hour or morefrom my home, and so are the clinical sites. My main problem is childcare, as my dh leaves the house at 5:30 am. I don't know who would watch my kids at that hour of the day!

I also have never worked Med-Surg. I went straight to a Pulmonary/Adolescent floor... which was a lot of teen CF and asthma patients, with the occasional overflow of appy's, ortho, and such. I would not have a clue what to do with an elderly person or their health problems. I guess that is why I need the refresher.

Also, I was only 21-22 years old when I worked in the hospital. I think that now, at 36, mother of 2, I have a lot more to offer in the maturity department!

Now that would not be a problem...............doing a little med surg, geri clinicals., esp. if you are near Beaumont, Tx. Let me tell what I did, I drove from Woodville Texas to Phes, ( three hours one way) it was worth it, work on the child care, it IS WORTH IT !!!:heartbeat

I went to my TxBON web site, and checked out some of the approved refresher course providers. In my case PHES was best for me, efficient, complete, and down right awesome !!!:redpinkhe

Those of you who have done the refresher course. Can you please described what you learned in clinicals? Someoone mentioned foley, IV and meds but what else has anyone out there learn during this time?

it was a refresher course, I did not learn anything, other than a few new things in pharmacology. Now I take that back, I did learn my critical thinking, assessment, and invasive skills were still good.

I plan to take the RN Refresher course and return to Psych (male RN) nursing, sometime within the next 12-18 months. I have been stuck performing health care administrative duties for the past 5 years.

Does the RN Refresher course help those of us, that love Psych nursing?

I have a LPN/RN background that consists of Med-surg, Psyche, Home health, and Geriatrics. I have been offered a position working part-time performing Psych (corrections-RN) nursing and will also join the U.S. Army (reserve) Nursing Corps. The Army needs Psych nurses real bad.

I have completed a Paralegal (legal nurse) program, an MBA, currently working on an MSN (administration), and currently reside in the Dallas-TX metro area.

Sally, I have looked all over that site and I cannot find a list of approved refresher courses! I see a list for AD programs, BS programs and such, but no RN refresher courses. Am I blind or just stupid?! Do you have a link? I live in Dallas if anyone can help me out.
