Hi. I am a relatively new RN with 2 years of med/surg experience on a trauma ward at a busy urban hospital in Canada. I passed my NCLEX and am now a licensed nurse in Minnesota. I am planning on transferring my license to NY and am looking for advice from anyone who has done something similar.
- How long does it take to transfer your license to another state?
- What sort of job prospects are there for RNs in NY? I imagine that it will be quite competitive but am hoping to continue working in an acute care setting.
- Do you apply to each individual hospital you want to work at?
- Has anyone had experience with a TN visa? From what I understand, you have to be hired and have employer support in order to qualify. However, do employers hire foreign RNs in NY?
- I am planning on doing two of the NY state requirements (child abuse certificate, infection control certificate) next time I am in the city visiting my boyfriend. Any recs as to where I should take these classes?
Thanks in advance for any/all advice you can provide me with!!

New York City is extremely competitive for jobs. Sometimes hundreds of applications for a single slot. Highly desired jobs such as city trauma & emergency department are often filled by experienced nurses (5+ years) with appropriate specialty credentials and certifications (ACLS, TNCC, PALS, CEN, etc.) If you look in the NY forum you will see the struggles that new and experienced nurses are having finding jobs in the NYC area especially in acute care. There are definitely more nurses than jobs available.
You should be able to take the classes online as authorized courses are listed on the NY BoN website. The requirements for licensing as an internationally educated nurse are listed on the NY BoN website. You likely need to apply for CVS from CGFNS before applying for a nursing license in NY. That process can take 6 months.

Hey Lanna,
Wishing you luck on your quest. Sounds like it isn't easy out in NY!
Thanks for your replies! I am still motivated to try and obtain a position related to the type of work I am doing (Trauma nursing), so I have been signing up for a few courses. I recently completed the TNCC and would HIGHLY recommend it to anyone in (or interested in) Emerg or Trauma nursing. I also signed up for the ACLS. Hope these help with my applications! My passion is acute care but I have been doing long distance with the love of my life for 4+ years so I'm willing to temporarily make some sacrifices in order to immigrate.
