RN license reciprocity?

Published

I'm a Canadian RN, marrying an American so I'll be getting my residency and work permit soon. Do I still need to write the NCLEX? Or can I transfer the license over? I know you need the NCLEX for the TN Visa, but I'm thinking I may not need it. Does anyone know? Or know where to look? Thanks.

As far as I am aware for some states They may accept your Canadian licence however a lot will depend when you qualified but generally you still need to meet state requirements and pass NCLEX

Thanks for the reply :)

My understanding is that your marriage has nothing to do with your actual licensure, only with your legal standing to actually work in the US.

Until around 2004 (or thereabouts) there were about 6 states that permitted Canadians that passed their licensure exam in Canada to work in the US w/o NCLEX. This though was changing, and my understanding is that within 2 years, ALL licensed nurses in the US were required to pass the NCLEX due to policy change. I had several Canadian friends in PA that were freaking out over studying for the NCLEX at the time.

It would be best to contact the state where you will be practicing.
