bump....me too

Ok...me too!!! I live in Fort Myers Florida right now and it is riddiculous I get $21.50/hour and pay 1050 in rent and you should see the electric and water bill! Austin is #2 in the US to live...so I am interested there. I looked into Bouler CO, Vancouver Wa, and also San Diego Cali! But, Austin seems to be the best!

Anyone who has information on pay and maybe some who know about the CRNA industry let me know pls...as I will have my bachelor and then trying to get an ICU job now!!!

Thanks!

Although I live about an hour from Austin, I was told pay is not as great there as in other areas. To work in an ICU in Austin, you need to have prior ICU experience, unless you get a spot in an internship...I only know this because one of my coworkers is from Austin and they worked on a med-surg unit for about 7 months...then they came to my hospital because they were able to get into the ICU.

As far hospitals, Seton & St. David's are the main hospitals, and I have heard excellent things about both. There is also Austin Heart, which is part of St. David's.

There is also Scott & White, which isn't located in Austin, but in Temple...about 30-40 minutes north of Austin. That hospital is a level-1 trauma center and I have heard excellent things about that hospital, too.

The cost of living is pretty high still in Austin; especially in comparison to the pay rate. The closer to downtown or central Austin the higher the rent. Utilities in Austin can also be rather high. The electric is supplied by City of Austin and they are notorious for $250+ electric bills in the summer months. If you go further out to rent it can be cheaper but traffic can be tough to navigate during the 7:30AM to 6PM time frame.

In addition we are in a drought right now in this part of the state, well actually almost the entire state so things are bone dry and we have had some awful wildfires in the area in the past few weeks. It is pretty common to have 100+ days most of July and August.

I know I am sounding all negative about my home town but even though this part of Texas has not suffered as extensively as some other areas it is not nearly as welcoming an environment employment or pay wise as it was even a few years ago. You need to be prepared to pay rather high rent, buck traffic, endure some scorching heat during a severe drought and have some awesome skills to bring to the table to get a job in the heart of Texas right now.
