RN can't find job, what gives?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I have been a nurse for 3 years. Started out in LTC, moved onto Med/Surg, and then started travel nursing. My first Med/Surg job, the floor closed, and they didn't want to train me in any other specialty in the hospital, with my LTC background.

Why in tarnations can I not find any work?

It got so bad, that I ran out of money for gas, to even get to an interview. I even didn't eat for a few days, because I had no money for food. I exhausted my savings. I was suppose to start a position, but there orientation was an hour away from there faciltiy. I had no way to get there. How embarassing.

I heard that the shortage is over on the West coast? And also on the East, where I am from. I felt that last year, and had to move from my hometown. Where are people hiring?

What about travel nursing, does it really ruin the resume? I heard both different from recruiters. I am afraid to take another travel assignment because I am afraid it is ruining my chances of finding a permanent position.

I have great work references and I love being a nurse. But, I haven't worked since July and came here for some suggestions as what to do. I don't want it to come down to me going into another field, since I worked so hard to get here in the first place. But, I seem to have gotten stuck over here and can't seem to move up in my career. All the students in my graduating class are doing so well. They did their year of Med/Surg and was able to move on. Sigh... :crying2:

you need to talk to someone who will be honest with you. as a manager, i can tell you that there is some fatal flaw in your job history, recommendations, or interview style. if you honestly want input, i'd talk to anyone who is willing to share the real reason for your multiple rejections. :(

My resume is not the problem, I made sure again, with 12 people after my last post. They don't know what the problem is either. I always ace the interview, but I don't have any money to get to one now. Moved to a place with no public transportation again, sigh. You need money to look for a job, once you run out there is no hope. A New Grad could get a job faster than I can, I swear.

The flaw in my history, that I have been told about is the travel nursing. But, travel nurses on here say it isn't so. It all comes down to the recruiter, who isn't sending my resume to management, it doesn't even get that far. My question is who are these recruiters? I swear I have only worked with one who was a nurse. So if you are a manager, you wouldn't even see it.

I am just out of luck and I think facilities, organizations, etc. should stop being picky if there is a shortage going on. Which, I believe there isn't. You should see me going to the church for help, when they ask what I do or did. They say, "Oh a nurse's aid", and I say, "No a RN". I will probably have to work as something else and leave the nursing field. So I can get some money to pay for something.

I say the nursing industry has no love for me and it is their loss not mine, because I am a good nurse. Well, was a good nurse.

Just to get you by have you tried Dr. offices clinics and such? Nursing potisions outside of the hospital setting? It may not be your dream job but it will put food on your table, gas in your tank and pay the rent.

Can someone close this thread?

It is too late, I have no money. Lol, people seem to think you can just get to work with no money, no internet, no gas, etc. Pretty soon I won't have any water either and then I can't shower. Nice smell for the interview.

Thank you.

ummm have you filed for unemployment? It took me 6 weeks to find a job after i left one of 10 yrs. I had my retirement to live on though. I looked on the net and in the papers. Are the traveling agencies not calling you either?
