RN (CRNA degree from abroad)-> CRNA

Nursing Students SRNA

Published

Hi everyone,

Does anyone know how to transfter educational credits from CRNA abroad to CRNA program here?

Any tips, suggestions would be appreciated!

The shorter the program the better; I wonder if there are flexible fromgrams that can accept most of my credits?

I am working as RN, I have CRNA degree and work experience from abroad, I also was CS educator. But as I understood here to get certified as CRNA one cannot just sit CRNA exam. To do that one needs to complete US CRNA program unlike NCLEX RN.

I had no problem doing it under supervision here but cannot since certification was not done.

I do not really want to retake full program from scratch. I am ok to be tested, examined, evaluated etc if it can lead to certification. Any suggestions of what to do? please;))

The most definitive answer you can get is by contacting a program director of a nurse anesthesia program. In most cases it involves petitioning the dean of the school or the department designated with the authority to grant advance standing. Most graduate schools have a policy which dictates how many credit hours can be awarded. Don't be surprised if the answer is they don't transfer any- many schools don't. I know the foreign medical graduates (FMG) have to pass the same USMLE series and then they have to apply for a residency just like a med. student would, even if the FMG was an attending in a sub-specialty. While foreign nurse RNs just have to pass a test as you did. It seems the higher the level of provider, the higher the requirement. It is a given that professions tend to be "closed shops" when it comes to licensing. For example, some countries allow medical students to "moonlight" as nurses to help pay with expenses. However, to sit for the NCLEX or foreign nurse's exam, graduation from a nursing program is required, thus an MD even though they just worked as a nurse, can not take the nursing license exam. It is just the way it is, so plan on taking the whole program over again no matter how much experience or training you have in a foreign country.

Good luck!

I agree with lyela, it is going to be difficult to get much advance standing in most, if not all, colleges. Where did you complete your nurse anesthesia training?

In order to take the Certification Examination you must 1)graduate from an accredited Nurse Anesthesia program within the past 2 years 2)have an unrestricted license as a Registered Nurse. So other than an individual institution determining if they will accept any credits toward a nurse anesthesia program- there is no alternative to not completing an entire Nurse Anesthesia program.
