RN to BSN, still considered "new grad?"

Hello Texas nurses. I graduated with ADN from a college in Houston, and we relocated to DFW right after graduation. Not realizing HOW SATURATED the DFW market is with new grads, and how few hospitals will hire ADN (most require BSN).

So I'm working on my BSN and doing private duty in the meantime.

My question is, once I finish my BSN I might have more than a year experience as an RN, depending on how long it takes me to finish. Will I still qualify as a "new grad" for these residency programs that require BSN *and* less than one year of experience?

That would depend on the individual employer, but I would guess there is good chance that you will not.

Even though I live in a different state and our residency program is more so directed at newer nurse graduates, it is also a support system for the in-boarding of nurses new to hospital nursing and new to the entity. I would hope other residencies would also be set up this way but your best bet would probably be to call the HR's of the respective facilities you plan on applying to. Good luck and remember that hospital nursing is not always the greener grass!

No, you will not qualify as a new grad in this market with a year of experience and going from ADN to BSN. However, some of the residencies state they are open to experienced nurses who want to switch specialties.
