Hey,
I live in NY and I'm looking into 2 RN-BSN programs. 1) Western Governors University and 2) Suny Delhi. What i like about WGU is its cheap, and fast (can finish within 6 months), but what I dont like is since its pass/fail I'm worried I wont feel motivated to work for a high grade - as long as I pass who cares, and not having that drive to strive for a good grade means I'll probably be very lazy and procrastinate alot. On the flip side, Suny Delhi will take through the summer of 2013, but they are structured and have deadlines. I know a lot of people out their are in WGU but are there any people from the NY area in the program currently? Any advice? I have to decide by Tuesday which way I'm going to go and I'm freaking out - I dont want to make the wrong decision - any advice?
THanks!
I am in the WGU program and it is working out well for me. I have no plans of pursuing an NP so the pass/fail grading wasn't an issue for me. If I plan on pursuing my MSN in Administration or Education in the future I will just do it through WGU. I recently met a nurse that was in a CRNA program and she did her BSN through WGU. She was able to transfer her WGU units into the CRNA program.
I looked into a lot of schools and WGU fit my needs the best and the price is very attractive. After transferring in my ADN credits I needed 23 more units for the BSN program which is 8 classes. I was motivated by saving money and worked at a fast pace. I finished 18 units in my first 6 month term for a cost of $3645. Now I'm in my second term and finishing my last 5 units. I saved the hardest classes for last, evidence based practice and my 90 hour community health practicum. This term is only $1400 so $5045 total for my BSN. There are no tests in the BSN program. It is all paper writing and is 100% online. Another thing I liked about the program was there is no requirement to read other people's posts on a message board in a specified time period and reply to them. That was a requirement at a few of the schools I looked at.
The school is fully accrediated and I am definitely learning a lot. This program would be difficult for people that are not self motivated. You don't have any hard deadlines for assignments, just deadlines to finish the classes. You speak to your mentor every week and the mentor tries to keep you on track. I have until March to finish my classes and have been slacking off a bit lately. You can finish the whole thing in 6 months but I can't imagine doing that while working full time. The average time is 12 months. WGU isn't for everyone but it's perfect for me!
I'm glad to hear you like it! at this point I'm really at a loss for what to do. I love the sound of chamberlin but there is something so unappealing about being $20,000 in debt when with WGU I can pay most out of pocket... But Chamberlin sounds SOOOO much more appealing in almost every other way than WGU. The masters programs I'm looking into have said that they will accept a BSN from WGU but the nursing field seems to change their requirements constantly and i dont want to be stuck. ahhh decisions!!

Complete Coursework: 13 months Credit Hours: 35 Tuition: $8,995
Univ. Texas/Arlington. All online, reasonably priced, no clinical. My hospital has a partnership with them, and will pay most of the cost for me. I plan to soon start on that journey. Just need a LITTLE more time away from nursing school.
