RN-BSN Advice

Hey,

I live in NY and I'm looking into 2 RN-BSN programs. 1) Western Governors University and 2) Suny Delhi. What i like about WGU is its cheap, and fast (can finish within 6 months), but what I dont like is since its pass/fail I'm worried I wont feel motivated to work for a high grade - as long as I pass who cares, and not having that drive to strive for a good grade means I'll probably be very lazy and procrastinate alot. On the flip side, Suny Delhi will take through the summer of 2013, but they are structured and have deadlines. I know a lot of people out their are in WGU but are there any people from the NY area in the program currently? Any advice? I have to decide by Tuesday which way I'm going to go and I'm freaking out - I dont want to make the wrong decision - any advice?

    I think a 6-month RN-BSN program is really suspicious, so I went to the WGU website to see this for myself (http://www.wgu.edu/online_health_professions_degrees/bachelor_science_nursing_degree_details#time).

    They posted on their website that the standard time to finish the RN-BSN program is 18 months. Perhaps it may be possible for you to finish the program in a shorter period of time, depending on what credits you transfer in as well as how many credits you want to take per 6-month term. Maybe you could do it even in 6 months if you have a prior BA/BS and plan to do nothing but coursework for those 6 months...but I'd really check into it thoroughly before signing up, so you know what you're getting into.

    I am also in the New York area i was first very interested in Suny downstate but they are not very flexible so i am leaning towards Ohio University.I found the OU thread on AN and it is very informative and so i applied you can check it out it is very reasonable.

    I am enrolling in SUNY Delhi in spring of 2012 and have been accepted. I looked at a lot of other RN-BSN programs, but this seemed to be the best program I could find that met in the middle ground of being both affordable, respectable, and convenient. WGU only allows you to go up to a 3.0 GPA and is on a pass/fail basis. I just don't like the sound of that and I am planning on pursuing graduate school as well. I find SUNY Delhi has a solid program (with clinical requirements as well, which I find to be a plus) and is affordable at about $210 a credit. Also, SUNY Delhi has 7/8 week semesters. So what if it takes you until 2013 summer? What is the rush? Unless you are hoping to apply for a certain position by then that requires a BSN. Take your times and things'll be fine.

    In general, I fnd SUNY Delhi to be a more reliable and respectable institution than WGU.

    The only thing I know is that the grade system is very weird. You end up getting a 3.0 no matter what. IMO you would have a tough time taking that and trying to earn a higher degree, whether it is because your GPA might be too low, or they don't accept the way they score students. Good luck :)

    I originally applied to Delhi. I'm going with Ohio University instead. Delhi is like 180 hours of clinicals, and is $240 a credit hour. I just couldn't justify the clinicals and higher tuition rate when I found another program that is supposed to be just as good.

    There are plenty of RN-BSN programs online without any clinical requirements. Check out Chamberlain College of Nursing online. I have heard only bad things about WGU nursing programs. If you want to move onto an MSN, WGU will hurt your GPA because of the pass fail thing. I think you only get a 3.0 for passing. That won't get you into an NP program.

    So officially I started WGU Novemeber 1st - I jsut havent done much work for it because thers something about it thats giving me weird vibes - i'm going to call them tomorow to discuss any kind of refunds they might be willing to give - i jsut want to have a backup plan... i would love chamberlin if it wasnt so expensive!! i have a BA already so after 4 years of college and 2 years of nursing school i dont want to be in shcool another 2 years....
