Hello. I haven't seen a thread for Rio Hondo ADN Spring 2024 applicants so I made one for anyone else who is applying and has questions or wants to keep in touch for the application process.
Best of luck to everyone!

I will say that the senior teachers that taught before your class were great which is where the reputation came from so I feel bad that you guys don't get to experience that. everything came from the powerpoints because they actually took time to read the book and made sure everything that was needed to be known on the test was on the powerpoints.
But the new teachers kinda suck, they even told us that they made the test hard on purpose to help us prepare for the NCLEX, but the problem with that is that they don't teach us what might be on the test or to think critically, we have to do that on our own. they also are still looking for staff to take over Pharm and other classes as well, which makes sense because the quality is horrible in those classes.
In the end, the NCLEX rates at rio were good because of the old teachers. my cohort is the last cohort that got to experience the old teachers except for advanced pharm and med surg 2 because one of the senior teachers stopped teaching last semester.
-Arem- said:Hi RHC ADN Students- How is your actual experience in the ADN Program? Do you have any advice for incoming ADN students at RHC? What to expect, to study ahead, and to prepare for (Materials to prepare)?
my advice is not to go, especially if u have other acceptances. this is probably one of the hardest nursing programs in socal, meanwhile my other friends in other programs have a much easier time.

I appreciate your advice. I see that the attrition rate is high but the NCLEX rating of first time takers from both remaining and previous students was good. Do you mind answering these questions for me?
1. Considering you know what to experience at RHC before you started, if RHC is 30 minutes away from your place and at the same time you have offers from another competitive schools that are 1 1/2 hours away from you, would you take rather choose another school or choose RHC?
2. Do you know other students I can also connect to, or which day is best to visit the school when I can meet some current students and have the chance to ask them about their personal experience and thoughts about the program and the support they are receiving from the faculty?
3. What do you think should an incoming student expect, study ahead, and prepare for (Materials, best practices, etc.)?

I'd can only assume the reason for the high NCLEX results is because they root out the bad test takers since they have such a high attrition rate. This school is not scared to dump students. But I will say that I do feel like the clinical experience in the school is great, but the theory side is lacking. To preface, I was lucky to take Fundamentals and Med Surg 1 with the old professors, but you guys will have a totally new professors who haven't taught these classes for a long time. Not to mention the school is short staffed which explains the horrible theory experience a lot of students have been facing, so we had the same teacher teach Pharm 1, ADV Pharm, and Med Surg 3, which is insane, and she's a horrible teacher to boast too.
To give you some background, this school just changed it's curriculum and how the classes are set up. Before the change, Fundamentals was a semester long class that you take on its own, but with the change it is now a quarter long class (8 weeks, instead of 16 weeks), not only that you will be taking it together with Pharmacology which is a very difficult class here, and then you will take Med Surg 1 the next quarter along with Pharmacology as well for your first term. So actually, your experience at this school will be extremely tough out of the gate, because not only will you need to pass skill check offs, but you need to pass med check offs all in one-term, meanwhile with the old curriculum, we took Fundamentals as it's own class before taking med surg 1 and pharm.

To answer your other questions:
1. If I knew what I was coming into before I chose RHC, I would easily pick the 1 1/2 hr long commute to another school. The other schools around the area are much easier than RHC, remember the goal of nursing school at the end of the day is to pass the NCLEX, you don't want to waste money on school that isn't going to even help you pass nursing school, because then it's just a waste of time and money. Now if the old professors were still here, I would recommend RHC a little bit more, but I can no longer recommend them due to this.
2. As someone that has talked to a lot of my peers we all agreed that if we knew that this was going to be the situation we were going to be in, we wouldn't have chose RHC. I can't really recommend a good time but if you wanted to talk to other students there is one class RN taking adv pharm and med surg 3 this term, you can catch them on their break in between those classes. I won't specify the exact time, but you can search it on the RHC class schedule. I think a lot of us though have glowing reviews for the old professors, but again, the new professors just don't share their same passion.
3. I wouldn't worry about prepping before nursing school, because no amount of studying can prepare you for the tests at RHC, it's very critical thinking focused. Just enjoy your time before you enter. But dosage calculations are good to know though because you will be doing a lot of those, so I'd say practice getting good at that. Everything else you will learn along the way, get ready to read a lot as well once you enter your OB rotation.

Thank you so much for being generous with your time and addressing my concerns. It makes sense and I find it very helpful. I appreciate you for expressing your care for the incoming and future students. Your response suggests that long commute seems reasonable compared to the unncecessary challenges students have to deal with at RHC. Because instructors teach different classes due to issue on staffing, the quality of teaching seems compromised and limited the support the instructors can provide to students.

even the second years haven't gotten theirs yet, there seems to be some issue.
