Retired Nurses

Published

I am struck by the amount of talent & knowledge that is embodied in nurses that retire and is lost to the profession. I think about options for tapping into that wealth, such as mentors specifically assigned to new nurses separate from nurses working in a unit, or facilitating weekly support groups for nurses. Other thoughts?

Thanks

Corporate health care would never pay for that. I plan on being a Walmart greeter. At lease they get paid and also have a 20% store discount!

Walmart doesn't let the greeters sit anymore and there was a leaked memo years ago they were unhappy with all their older loyal workers due to cost of health insurance so they have done all they can to dissuade people to make the jobs physically difficult.  They also changed it to involve more than greeting, cross train to other store needs to make sure they get the most of out each worker.

However, I was at the local Meijer's store and they have elderly greeters that are allowed to sit who at least one had obvious physical limitations.  What is crazy is there aren't rights to sit at a job.  Whereas in the UK they have a law allowing workers to sit, the right to sit law.  Many of us older people, especially nurses and healthcare workers have back issues such as spinal stenosis from all the heavy lifting back in the day and wouldn't be able to stand at a job all day.  I just wonder why America is so inhumane with working conditions.  Oh yeah, you can ask for disability accommodations, but they have the legal right to refuse as well.

I was just at Walmart yesterday and the greeter who also checks receipts(which you have a legal right to refuse) and says "Good By, Have a nice day" was stitting! Maybe it's a local thing. In any case my comment was a joke. I will likely be far too busy as the garden gets bigger every year and I plan to travel some as well.

Davey Do,

Congratulations! There is something magnetic between the couch and my body that I fight daily, with various levels of success. If I make myself walk early in the day, chances are much improved for success.

And there is something to be said for cultures that honor their elders and what they have to offer, which I am not so sure we practice here, to our detriment.

I'm glad the greeter was able to sit.  But this isn't common, unless they have reversed there decision due to community backlash.   Here is an article about it. https://www.pbs.org/newshour/nation/walmart-is-getting-rid-of-greeters-worrying-workers-with-disabilities

and I found an article re the leaked memo about not wanting older loyal workers as well this is from years ago.  https://workdaymagazine.org/leaked-wal-mart-memo-shows-callous-attitude-toward-employees/

This is a broader issue than just Walmart, although many of those workers were going to lose their job due to these new requirements and many of them were very popular and beloved in their local community.  But there are so many jobs that require standing for long periods of time, that technically wouldn't be necessary but is mandated by the company.  That is the main reason I mentioned it as it is inhumane and one of the reasons older people retire early and exit the workforce.  They claim there is still such a shortage of workers but how much do they do to recruit people as something as simple as being able to sit if needed!  There are only so many "desk" jobs out there.
