I'm a stay-at-home mother of a 3 yr old and a 6 yr old and husband is in the Navy. We live on a single income and I'm turning 37 yrs today. I want a career and am thinking about my future. Problem is; I'm not 100% sure what I want to do. I never had the desire to be a nurse one day, but I feel by working out of a hospital atmosphere like a Doctors office, would be something I'd prefer much more. I would start out a LVN then work my way up, but my other anxiety is, how in the world does a person absorb all that material? Since I have my 3 yr old to take care of, would it be in my best interest to take a 1-yr online course? The medical field is a new world to me. I'm on the fence about this I don't want to NOT pursue this field out of fear of failing when I could actually be good at it..........

Happy Birthday!
I don't have any advice for you (I'm kinda in the same boat- sahm w/ 3 & 6yr old) other than either see if you can shadow a nurse or medical assistant for a few hours to get a feel of the job and see if it's something you'd be interested in.
Good luck!

Happy Birthday, and welcome.
My suggestion would be to volunteer in a hospital for a little while and get a feel for the different jobs that are available. It isn't all about nursing! Once you see the variety of different specialties and fields that there are available you will probably have a clearer idea about what you might like to do, and what you absolutely wouldn't want to do no matter how much they pay you.
At least with volunteering you get to put a toe in the water without wasting too much time or money.
Good idea! Thanks.

Thank you for the great suggestion. It makes since to volunteer and test the waters before jumping in.

My advice to you is to figure out what makes your heart come alive and persue that. Otherwise, you'll never be happy. And as a 42 year old that went to Nursing School at 39... we're not getting any younger hon and you deserve nothing less!
Frankly, I don't like working with the nurses that became nurses for the money, the stability of the job, etc and I don't want them taking care of me. The medical field needs lots of people, not just nurses, but it's a hard job and you need to really be dedicated to your profession and your patients to be fair to them, and to yourself.
If working in a Dr. office is something you think you'd like, become a Medical Assistant, because even LVN's are often over qualified.
