How has the protocol to remove catheters changed in the past 5-10 years?

Were there any regulations about how long catheters remained in place 10 years ago?

How long ago did they start regulating the length a time a catheter could remain in place?

Can you please tell us what research you have done on this topic and what you have found out before we do your homework for you? You ought to be able to find all of that with a rudimentary nursing literature search in CINAHL, access to which is available at your college or institution library, or via interlibrary loan from your local public library. What type of catheter are you talking about?

I can tell you that we worried about infections from urinary catheters 25 years ago, when I first started nursing. We were taught "way back then" how to place them using sterile technique, and how to care for them. We didn't leave them in for any longer than necessary, either. I even worked with doctors who did not want us to place urinary catheters on patients, period. If you are a student, I hope your instructors don't think worrying about infections with catheter use is something "new."

Or is this one of those misguided programs that teaches students that no reference older than 5 years is trustworthy or citable? (certainly not true).
