Hi there,
I have a question, i read here in this forum about people taking microbiology and A&P II.... are these classes necessary?? Sorry for this dumb question, but i checked the Cy-fair college Nursing site and it only mentions the 3 pre-requ English 1301 , Psychology 2301 and A&P I in the admission criteria!!!!!!!
Can you please explain why do you take all these classes before applying????
I don't have a lot of time in my hand to take all those!!!
And if they are a must, can you tell me which one are they??? i have no idea??
Thank you in advance,

The requirements vary from each college, but I would definitely recommend getting all your pre-reqs out of the way before you start nursing school! Nursing school is very demanding and time consuming, and it's better to get most, if not all, of your pre-reqs out of the way so you can completely focus on your nursing courses. Also, most schools just state the MINIMUM requirements to be considered for admission. I know that most schools around here say "minimum 2.5 gpa" but they won't even consider you unless you have at least a 3.5

I assume I found the correct college by the name you listed above, but if you look at the nursing curriculum, once you get accepted to the program A&P II and Micro are included:

The college I am applying to only had four pre reqs (English, Chemistry, A&P 1, and Pysch 1) so it seems fairly easy until you go to register.
Then I found out I needed some math classes before I could take Chemistry, and Biology before I could take A&P 1. These were not pre reqs, but pre reqs for the pre reqs.
Then I found out that even though I could apply with just those four classes, and of course having taken the pre reqs to take them there were other classes called required classes. These classes were offered once you were selected for the program, but you got points on admission for having completed them. As it turns out it so competitive that you really have to complete most if not all of them before you will be competitive enough to be selected. These classes included (A&P 2, Microbiology, Pharmocology, Pathophysiology, End of life issues, Speech, fine arts credit, Spanish for medical professionals, and a couple of more I can't remember).
I would check really well. As the above poster said every school is different and it is possible that you might have found one that you will only need to take three classes to get into, but I dont think it's likely.

Each school is different, but there is usually a BIG difference between the "official" pre-reqs and what you actually need to have completed to stand a chance against the competition. I had finished two math courses, A&P I, A&P II, two English courses, two psych courses, intro to sociology, health/nutrition, biology of Cancer (not required, I just thought it was interesting), and am currently working on microbiology. I got an A in everything for a GPA of 4.0 with 34 credits, but I still didn't get in. I was told it was purely a numbers game--the competition had even MORE courses completed or already had a degree, worked in the field, etc., for extra "points." I would get as much as is humanly possibly completed before applying. Good luck!

I'll echo what the above posters said... the LPN school I'm applying to has 5 "non-nursing" classes that are supposedly taken during the program, concurrently with the nursing courses:
English Comp I
Intro to Psych OR Intro to Sociology
Biology I (molecular and cells)
A&P I
A&P II
However they "strongly recommend" that you take the classes before entering the LPN program, and it turns out that, due to the competitive admissions, typically all the students they accept already have finished all the non-nursing classes before applying. So, really, they're not strictly "prerequisites" but they might as well be.
In my case, I have the first 3 of the above classes (A's in all of them) from my bachelor's degree, and I went ahead and applied to the program and signed up to take the A&Ps over the summer, so I'll have them done before the program starts in the fall. I'm hoping my TEAS score (93.5%... compared to an average of around 76-79% for the students that get admitted) will convince to take me. In case it's not, I'm taking Micro over the summer too so, after the summer, I'll be in good position to apply to some ADN programs.

Assuming you are talking about Lone Star College Cyfair you need to take all of the courses listed for the ADN degree including pharmacology in order to be competitive in points for entry into the program. I have taken all of the required courses for the ADN and only have to concentrate on the program courses from here on out. You really don't have time to concentrate on the nursing courses with clinicals and all the other courses at the same time. I suggest that you may want to make an appointment with the counselor over the healthcare degree programs. Also, I know there are other threads about pre-req's on here also. Just my !

In the program I am applying for we had to have A&P 1 & 2, Pharmacology, Pathophysiology, Microbiology, Nutrition, Psych, Algebra, Comp 2 & Speech all before we could even apply to the program. So if we don't get in, we are pretty much screwed. Worse yet, with our college the credits aren't transferable to anywhere else. This is an ADN program.
Thank you guys for your answers.
Oh my god i a in chock, that is a lot to do before even applying!!!???!!!
How long would that take to finish ??plus Ace them too!!! Wow !!! I don't know now if i can do it, I have a family to take care of which means i should go to school only part time!!! I don't know what to do anymore.
Anybody in the same shoes??? plz share and advice and ideas with me. Thanks,

I have a 3.7 GPA right now. I also have 4 kids under the age of 6 living in my house. So it is possible to do well and take care of the kids too. Your house might suffer a little, but in the grand scheme of things, it isn't really that important.
And yes, we have to do all the before even applying. It stinks. I feel like my whole life is hinging on getting in. If I can't get in for whatever reason (there is no wait list for my program) I will have to start all over somewhere else. What a waste of time and money.
I am a divorced mom of 3 boys and it has taken me about 4 years to take all of my classes.
Dmat 097

Biology
Chemistry
A&P1
A&P2
Microbiology
Pharmocology
Pathophysiology
Music appreciation
Spanish for medical professionals
End of life issues
intro to psych
Developmental psych
English
speech
Nutrition
Human Sexuality
and I also took two PE credits and two computer credits for my BS later on.
My secret was I had no idea I would need so many classes to get in. I planned everything out thinking I needed 4 classes. When I registered that went to 8 classes, and somewhere along the way I figured out it was a lot more, but by then I had already invested so much there was no backing out.
I am praying for an acceptance letter this month, and then I can start my clinicals in the fall. I won't lie its been tough at times. My mom and dad stepped in and really helped me. My kids have been great and have helped me study, and been very understanding throughout. I inspired my best friend to go back to get her teaching degree, and then we really supported each other. She just graduated...WAY to go Stacy!!!!
The journey while tough was awsome. I have met a lot of great people, professors and friends. I am now so much wiser, and I would like to think a little smarter. To speed things up I took some courses over the summer, and some on the internet so I could pack more into a semester. If I made less than an A I retook the course so I could maintain my GPA to be competitive so that added more time on. I applied for any and all financial aid, and took out loans so we could manage, and we also learned to live on a budget.
If its your dream then just jump in the deep end, and you will eventually reach the other end. Think of it this way...in 5 years you WILL be 5 years older no matter what so why not be 5 years closer to what you want in life. Just go for it.
