$$ Required physical for 1st year nursing students..$$

I just had my physical done and had my labs drawn this morning. My Dr. told me that my insurance probably won't pay for this and I will have to foot the bill!! :eek: I asked her to please bill my insurance anyway because I'm going to at least try and get them to pay. Does anyone else have this problem??

The $$$$$$ for nursing school is really starting to add up!!

I've been fortunate, my insurance covered the whole kit and kaboodle.

He, he...thanks for your concern. Yes, I am purchasing health insurance for the fall. Couldn't afford it this last year. Health insurance may be a necessity, but it sure is expensive if your employer doesn't provide it.

I'm sure there are alot of us "uninsured" folks. :eek:

I got out the yellow pages and called around explaining to the people that I was a nursing student (loosely translates into BROKE! :D) for prices for the various things required for school.

Physical at doc in the box $45

MMR & TB skin test at Health Unit $10 each

Hep B (optional at my school, but I am getting them) at Health Unit $35 per shot

Tetorifice $13 for the hospital to pull the file (would have only cost $10 at health unit for the shot, but I HATE tetorifice shots..ewwww)

Urinalysis, 7panel drug screen, varicella titer and hct/hgb at drug testing facility $80

Total (minus the hep b) $158.00

The prices really do vary from place to place, so it's best to call and find the best prices and go all over town if you have to. Especially for us "uninsured" folk. There are also clinics that base it on your income, but I don't feel like going through all the hassle of digging up mounds of paperwork....

Tricare covered all my immunizations (I didn't have any vaccination records), but I had them done through Prime at a military clinic. Also, anyone concerned about vaccination $$ may want to check with local hospitals -- ours offers free vaccinations for volunteers... Good luck

My school will cover my health screening which was no more than BP/weight/temp/history and a blood draw for titers. I'll have to cover all the boosters etc and Hep B wchich will cost $$. I also have to get the TB skin test. Not much of a physical so I'm going to schedule one with Kaiser before I leave my job. Haven't had a real physical in about 10 yrs.

My insurance doesn't pay for "school physicals", so the doctor simply documented it as a yearly physical, as Jen2 mentioned above. That way I got the physical, titers, and PPD for the cost of my $15 co-pay.

That darn 2-step PPD was a pain though! Had to go into the office 4 times in two weeks. I think the gas back and forth probably wound up costing more than the co-pay!

It's really funny that I am reading about visits to the dr. for school. I just got back from my visit. Even though I don't need a physical, they are requiring that I have updated immunizations and active health insurance.

I have medicaid and they paid for everything and the school accepted them as my health insurance. I was fortunate.

Today I got my MMR (for some reason I am not immune to Rubella even though I got the shot as a child), HepB and TB. I am getting the records from the hospital to show that I had a tetnus shot last year. I did not want to get another tetnus shot.

Where is Ohio are you located? I am in Ohio also, in Sheffield Lake.

I also did not enjoy the drive 4 times to do the TB plus I had to drive to the same location yesterday for my shots. Oh well, all said and done.

LeesieBug - what college are you going to be attending in the fall?

I will going to Lorain County Community College in Elyria.

My sister lives in Parma and I lived in Cleveland up until 1 1/2 years ago when we moved out here. I used to attend Tri-C.

County Health dept here does free or low cost immunizations, even for adults. Also, I was lucky b/c I work as a PCT at a hospital here and had titers drawn to start work, so I got a copy of them for free! Cheated on the physical too... set it up as my annual.. saves lots of money!

Also... anyone w/o health ins... double check with your school... many require documentation of health insurance before they'll let you start any clinicals :)

Mine does not. It is "recommended" but not required.
