Required Admission Vaccines while breastfeeding?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I have had most of the required vaccines needed for admission but I don't believe that HEP A & B were administered when I was a child. According to the CDC website these vaccines shouldn't be given to a nursing mother. Would a school allow an (temporary) exemption of these vaccines for a legitimate reason like this (of course I would get the vaccine when I'm finished bf'ing) or is it a hard no..?

Have you been accepted into a nursing school?

I have not, the program I am applying to requires the vaccines be completed prior to admission.

Required is required. You may have to wait to complete your application.

I'd ask the school. We had a student in my cohort who couldn't get certain vaccines because she had a history of a severe reaction (Guillain-Barre Syndrome), and it didn't preclude her from completing the program. They may be willing to make a temporary exception for medical reasons, especially if you don't start clinicals first semester.

You might also try to figure out if there's a certain amount of time you could 'pump and dump' after you get the vaccines, though that would require pumping and storing extra milk ahead of time.

It will be okay. Tell them you need a medical exemption and then get a doctor's note.
