reporting fellow nurse to BON

Published

Hello to everyone! I'm new to this site and in need of advise. I work in a large cancer center and a couple of weeks ago I was approached by a fellow rn to start on iv on her so that she could take fluids home and hydrate herself. I explained to her I couldn't do that, there was no physician order and administering fluids at home was not appropriate. I stressed to her that she could get in big trouble for doing it. The next morning she sent me a text that she asked another nurse to do it and she agreed and placed the iv. she further explained by the time she got home the iv was infiltrated. when she came into work that same day she approached a 3rd nurse and a second iv was started and subsequently she went home and hydrated herself. I went to my manager and reported the incident..all 3 were placed on paid administration leave. they returned to work 4 days later because they told hr they didn't realize it was a big deal and they where very sorry. As u recall I advised the nurse when she asked me that she shouldn't do it. anyway a week later we had a meeting to discuss the incident and at that time they all stated they didn't do anything wrong..would do it again..and the problem was with me for reporting the incident and the manager for reporting it to hr. My manager contacted me the next day to discuss what happened and said she was going to inform hr of their true feelings regarding the issue. I should mention that after I reported the incident I was retaliated against by the nurses..in fact one of the nurses said in the meeting I need to "grow some balls" since I didn't go to them first before reporting them. I obviously can't stay there as long as they do. I don't want to be harassed or retaliated. against. I've already told my boss their behaviors are so unprofessional I can't work in an environment like that. my question is the company I work for did not report it to the BON since it was handled in house. However, their belief that they didn't do anything wrong makes me question that they will do other things. based on their attitudes should I report them to the BON ? I think after the meeting they will get fired anyway..but their attitude is scary for future violations.

That is really scary. They are basically practicing medicine without a license and stealing equipment. Drink a Gatorade! I'd let management handle it (as it has not been resolved yet) if it was me, first. If it happens again, BON. Seriously, that is ridiculous.

I know. It sounds odd for a nurse to ask another nurse to put in an IV for her for hydration. Sounds bizarre. I was thinking maybe she is diluting the narcs.

Bizzare doesn't even begin to describe it. But all of it is purely hear-say/he said, I said, she did except for 2 things: The fact that you received a text message regarding the incident, (which in itself sounds like a set up--knowing that you were totally against doing this, the nurse in question texted you about it? Seriously?) and that in a meeting they all said they would "do it again" and your manager was present for that meeting. Most parent companies have ethical hotlines--use it and report this. Quality assurance as well. Put it down in an incident report. Create a paper trail. You have your license to protect, and that you have knowledge of such an act and did not report it to the BON COULD put you in the hot seat. The only thing you could do is call and ask. And if you are Union, get your rep involved as well. NOT legal advice per TOS, however, please protect yourself and your license.

Please note the original post is from June 2012 (nine months ago) hopefully the situation has subsequently been resolved. Plus the OP has not returned to the site since June 2012.
