repeating a class

I haven't been here on the forum in a long time now. I partially finished my first semester.I had to drop down to part time because I was having a hard time coping with a heavy load of hard classes. I had is a final grade "D" in my health assessment class. I had the toughest teacher ever who never taught at all and left us in the wilderness of independent studying.Being new to nursing is my biggest struggle and ofcourse the fundamental ideas behind nursing was another part of my struggle.

I am quite disappointed with my "D" I never had to repeat a class in all my years of college so I 'm quite bumped right now. I suffered all along this semester with the critical thinking aspect of test questions so in one way I'm at peace when I understand that I'm repeating this class is not because I didn't study. Reality behind nursing school is surely very bitter!!!

I'm not taking any classes this summer I want time to ramp-up myself.Does anyone have any suggestions how I can work on my critical thinking-any books, cds etc.

Thanks. Maria.

Are you talking about nursing 101? I had a D for my mid term grade and luckily brought it up but I know how you feel. WHat I did was bought and inclex book by Sauders and studied that as a compliment to what I was presently studying. All the tests are "nclex" style based and I suggest that you look over as many as you can. The Saunders is a great choice since there are rationales for each section explaing the topics. Don't give up and just evaluate what THEY want you to know by remembering HOW they ask questions and bulild your skills from there. Plus the Saunders edition has a nice cd that comes with it with many questions. PRACTICE questions is what helped me, and I know that those tests can be hard for ones that have NO medical backround like me. Good luck.

Girl,

cheer up! I had to repeat the Assessment class too and I was very depressed at first but I brushed myself off and found a study skills class. I did very good the next time arround. Just read your notes every single day. Do the NCLEX questions in Saunders, that is what helped me and it is still helping me. READ, READ, READ! This class can be very difficult, tape the lectures if you can too. Most times the professor gives you what was said in class. You will do well. I had a problem with critical thinking but I am gradually getting over it. Do not put yourself under too much stress, sleep when you can and put in more hours of studying.

Good luck!

Thanks Ann.....Its been really hard to accept my shortcomings behind just passing a class. I even had thoughts that may be Nursing is not for me.Critical thinking is making tests almost near to impossible.Indeed its encouraging to hear from people like you who went through similar events in Nursing school like me. Thanks alot. Maria.

For me..I found assessment class the easiest . Now the nsg theory was another story. Wow was it ever dry ! I was really dissapointed in my final mark. And ANP? Almost failed one of them.

Chin up. :) Good luck.

The thing that is getting me through my situation is setting goals. And realizing what I should have been doing in Med-surg all along that I didn't do. I am taking summer school... and I petitioned (Successfully) so that I can take a higher level nursing course with my classmates that did pass. I just can't sit by idly (sp). Keeping moving is what's keeping me sane. As far as studying reading is the most important thing. Read like you never read before.

Learning to take these types of tests was very hard for me and for a lot of my classmates. First semester for some of us, was our first intro to crtical thinking as to how it applies to tests. Boy, were we in for a rude awakening. We lost 4 students out of a class of 59, which wasn't to bad I guess. Then came Med/surg I, and the instructor told us, she dont give any quarter at all. A good number of students were struggling through this, myself included. We had our final on tuesday, and grades were posted this morning, and I finished with a C. Not impressive, but does get me through to the next so called round. I am concerned about some of the others who had lower averages than I did, but wont know till june, when we start pharmacology. But a suggestion as mentioned earlier, get a good NCLEX prep book. I got Sanderson Comprehensive mid semester, and wish I had gotten it earlier. Have pharmacology one day a week, so will spend my leisure time working through my sanderson and help me to a better start in august.

Have A Great Day
