It looks like I may be moving to Seattle next year from Australia for my husband (IT) I will be coming on his E3 visa so will be able to work however the WA board have stated that I would have to study at either Rwnton or Tacoma community college before I could sit for the NCLEX. Has anyone done this course? What is studied? I would prefer to study before I come over so I can work straight away. I have emailed the colleges but haven't received a response. Thanks

G'day,

Another Aussie here following the same pathway (but not to the same state).....

Are you lacking in Pediatrics and/or Maternity Nursing?

G'Day indeed, I am missing both, I have looked at unis here in Australia but they want me to do the full Grad Dip Midwifery which I think might be more than I need? What have you done?

G'day,

I am facing the same predicament.

I could do Pediatrics in Australia.

I would be considered as a non-award student and the unit would cost between $2300-$2500 (theory and practical placement). But that still leaves me with a deficiency in Maternity.

Like you, I don't want to pursue the full Grad. dip in midwifery because it is not necessary.

I should caution you that some of the Paeds and Maternity courses in Australia may NOT be acceptable by the US standards. This is because some of them are distance education units (on-line learning) and some are without clinical placements.

As such, I have written to several colleges in the US and they have been very welcoming.

Some have informed me that the cost is approx. $2300 for the combined unit of Paeds and Maternity (theory and clinical placements)

At this stage, I am seriously considering going to the US next year and pursuing the combined unit of Paeds and Maternity.

When are you intending to move?

Thanks for the info, we are looking to move by the middle of next year. Australian universities haven't been very helpful, I am waiting to hear back from the nursing colleges in Seattle regarding costs but I will probably end up studying over there. My only concern is if I sit the NCLEX and somehow fail I would then have to wait another 90 days to sit, on top of the study time. Do you have any idea of how the job market is over there? I prefer theaters but I suppose I would take what I could get.

Hello, I was recently searching to the answer to the same question of how I could obtain the further training to qualify to take the NCLEX and came across this program located in Tacoma WA. This program director got back to me via email and seems very helpful. Here are his details:

I understand completely....I have been researching for the past nine months for a Maternity course and not getting any wiser. I even attended a post-grad session last week!

Admittedly, I will be attending a community college in another state to that which I am applying for registration.

I am not too sure about the job market in the US for nurses. However, a colleague recently scored work in LA, California. From her account, she didn't had to impress too many people. They were looking for a renal nurse and she had renal experience!
