Renegotiating salary

Nurses Professionalism

Published

I attended the new employee orientation yesterday after spending 3 months as a contractor and 2 weeks as permanent staff just to find out from other new RNs and the union reps that I am the only one starting with the lowest salary possible. Out of the 2 nurses starting with me, one has similar amount of experience and the other has just a little bit more than I do but works in a more demanding specialty. The union reps said there is little they can do on their end, and referred me back to my direct supervisor. There is a 6 month probation period, should I let my manager know now about my salary situation since it came from HR or wait until I finish my probation? The difference in pay won't make or break my financial situation, but 6 months is quite a long time.

Maybe find out if you are given a bump up in pay after your 6 month orientation/ probation period.

Take it as a learning experience, always ask for more..it will always be a yes or no.

It not only depends how much experience you have but what type. That's why it's not very helpful to compare your salary to your fellow orientees'. I'd tough it out for the six months and then try to make a good case for a decent raise. Good luck.

Im not diving into a new specialty. All of the nurses working on my unit are getting an automatic raise in May and if I get singled out again oh well...
