Relocating for a job

Published

Hello,

I was just wondering, I know many nurses are having trouble finding jobs ( me included). Would you relocate? I mean pack up your family and sell your home for a job somewhere else? I don't mean just on a whim, after research of course. How long should one keep looking for a job and not be working? I would move in a heartbeat. I love the idea of being in a new place. On the other hand, my husband hates the idea, doesn't want to leave our house or our state. I was just wondering how many people do it.

We are doing exactly that! We plan to put the house up for sale in March and I graduate from Nursing school in May. My state is awful for new grads, so we are willing to go wherever I can get a decent job. I want to do a new grad program in a specialty, so in order to do that, we need to move. I have been lucky that my fiance is on board. We had to weigh all the options, and we currently live in the Northeast with a very high cost of living and not a lot of opportunity. We feel like moving somewhere warmer with a lower cost of living will be a nice change for us. We will go wherever the job is....:D Sometimes you have to dream big and take a risk! Of course, we do not have any children which I am sure makes it a lot easier for us to move clear across the country!

Specializes in One day CCU maybe!.

We are doing this. Thankfully we only rent and from my in laws so we have no lease agreement. Basically we can move at the drop of a hat. I'm only putting in applications where I have family because I want my kids to have kids their own age they know. Plus I think it would be good to have a support system wherever we move. However, I am looking within a 1 hour radius of where I am now and the other cities I have family. Because...lets face it, all other places are having a hard time employing new grads also. Soooo I still haven't heard back from anywhere and I've been applying since October. I haven't even gotten one interview. So the possibility is out there that I may either have to move to another city where I know no one, or settle for a retail/customer service job until the market picks up.

I say put the house on the market now and rent until you know where you will end up. Selling a home can be a lengthy process. It took me 2 years to sell mine which is why we are in no hurry to buy again.

We live in the northeast too

The problem is my husband has a decent paying job that he enjoys. I would still make more money as a nurse. I have six year experience and I am not finding anything here in the NE. I would also like a more affordable place to live/better climate

I've been out of school since May. Packing up my car and driving from Boston to Texas for a job in two days!!! Eeek!

I relocated three years ago because I was fed up with being unemployed. Now I am unemployed in the area that I relocated to.

Specializes in RN, BSN, CHDN.

I relocated in september. Even though we were very prepared it has been very very hard work.

Make sure you both have jobs before you go!!!!! Unless you can survive on one nurses salary-

My husband still has no job and we are almost after 3 1/2 months bankrupted.

I have a wonderful story to tell about the pro's and con's of moving 2200 miles across America which I found harder to do then emigrating from the UK, but I would still do it! we moved to be closer to family and not away from family.

T

Holly that is great, what part of Texas? I am from Mass and moving to TX as well!

There are so many people relocating from Mass to Tx, in every field! It's crazy! I'm headed to Dallas and I'll be starting on the 18th. :D

Specializes in General med/surg for now ... stay tuned!.

Im in Australia, and all my nursing studies to date, and still 2 more years to go, has/is being done to enable me to live and work in Europe ... along with appropriate language studies. Or if I am still with my american man, he wants to move back to New York or Seattle .... so once my studies are done, I sell my house and Im gone and I cant wait! I say go for it!

Specializes in Ortho and Tele med/surg.

I don't have a husband and children, but I'm relocating to Texas from NJ. I love the idea that I'm going to move to a brand new place. It's exciting and a bit stressful at the same time. All my friends and family currently reside in NJ, but I see it as an adventure. I looked for about 6 months before I got something in Texas. I'm grateful that I have a job and that my friends and family are supporting me. Good luck.
