ADN nursing

Nursing Students ADN/BSN

Published

I got accepted into an ADN nursing program. (I already have a bachelors degree). An ADN program was the most affordable thing in my town. I always wanted to be a nurse and I am so excited and greatful. However, I need to vent. It just doesn't make any sense to me how it's becoming so hard for ADNs to get jobs while they psss the same exact exam BSNs do to practice as a nurse. Also why the heck are RN to BSN programs 2 additional years although traditional BSN programs are only 2yrs total.

Traditional BSN programs are 4+ years- where do you get the idea they are just 2??

I know for a fact the actual nursing portion in a BSN program is 2yrs. The first two years are gen ed and pre-requisites. Like I stated before I have a bachelors already so I'd like to think I know a little about college (undergrad at least) :)

Right. So the majority of those credits are gen ed degree credit required for any bachelor degree. There's your difference. There are 3-5 theory nursing classes that are additional as well.

It depends on where you live as to whether it is difficult to obtain a job with an ASN. More graduate BSN nurses means employers can pick and choose what they want.

There is no difference as far as licensing goes. But, having as many BSN nurses makes the hospital look good and that's honestly the reasoning.

Not universally. I'd like to think I know a little about it being a BSN program director and all....

This does not always ring true.. A tradition BSN consists of ALOT more than just 2 years of actual nursing portion. Maybe you should research them both to see the difference in courses needed. I'd like to think that I know a little about it seeing that I am actually doing it...

it depends on the state your in. the rn -bsn in california is only one year. I'm in an ADN program now. Me and some of my friends finished our pre reqs together and they are in a BSN program now, such as SJSU and SF state which is a 3 year program without the prereqs. even though i will be done with the adn in two years we will all be finished at the same time with our bachelors since the rn-bsn is only one year if everything goes as planned lol. So yea i see where your coming from since your states rn-bsn takes 2 years that sucks
