Registered in CA BON but wants to work in Florida...

Published

Hi All!

I am now preparing for my NCLEX exam here in the Philippines, the CA BON had just granted me eligibility. If ever I pass NCLEX but I wish to work in Florida, can you please tell me the steps on how to be licensed in Florida?:p

Because Ca will not issue you with a hard license because you have no SSN then you have to follow the requirements for license by application and get Ca to forward your results to Florida. Also for Florida you will need CES before they will look at your application. Everything can be found on the Florida BON website regarding foreign nurse. They also will not issue a hard license without SSN

First , pass the NCLEX. Second, you need to apply for a visa screen, which means, you must pass an english proficiency exam. Third, you would need an employer to petition you for an immigrant status. Once you have that, you must wait for your social security number. Then you would submit it to the California Board of Nursing so that you can have your California Nursing License. And, then, submit it to the Florida Board of nursing for reciprocity. However, you're biggest problem would be the time frame. THERE ARE NO AVAILABLE VISAS FOR NURSES COMING FROM DIFFERENT COUNTRIES TO COME INTO THE USA. You may pass your NCLEX but it would expire in 2 years. Unfortunately, there's no available "silver lining on the horizon" right now. PLEASE READ THE THREADS ON RETROGRESSION. LEARN THE FACTS ABOUT THE SITUATION IN THE USA BEFORE PAYING FOR ANYTHING

You do not need to wait for a SSN before applying to Florida and transferring NCLEX results from Ca.

Actually, the only way Florida's Board of Nursing would even look at your application for reciprocity is if you're already a licensed RN from another state. In CA, you need a SSN before you get a license. If one is applying directly to the Florida Board of Nursing then you wont need a SSN to submit your NCLEX results.

But they are not licensed with another board as Ca will not issue without SSN so all they have to do is apply license by application and arrange Ca to forward results to Fl. But before they can do that they have to get CES done as Fl will not accept application without it done

I get your point, silverdragon. I am describing licensure by endorsement from another state. I had read the Florida board of nursing licensing qualifications and it doesn't specify anything about a simple NCLEX score from another state. My friend had the same conundrum before, he had passed the CA NCLEX,but doesnt have a SSN, so no license. When he tried to apply in Florida, his immigration lawyer wanted him take ANOTHER NCLEX exam. I'm guessing foxyrn's best bet would be to email the Florida board of Nursing. At least, thats official.

Then his lawyer was wrong. NCLEX has reciprocity it is only licenses that you have to endorse and meet BON/BRN requirements

But the question is how to WORK in Florida, not really if NCLEX is reciprocal to all states. If you want to work in Florida, you must be LICENSED either by examination or endorsement, plus the other requirements. Passing the NCLEX in California doesn't immediately entitle you to a license. And isn't licensing the crux of this thread? Again, I would reiterate, emailing Florida's BON. Just my humble opinion.

Does Florida require an SSN before issuing a hard license?

How do I get an SSN while Im still in the Philippines? Is there a way or unfortunately none?

If I pass the NCLEX and didnt had a hard license immediately, what will happen? What do you mean that it will expire in 2 years?

Your reply is very much appreciated.

Thanks very much!!!

SIlverdragon says no...but I would email them if the NCLEX from the California BON is acceptable. Unfortunately, NCLEX does have an expiraton (I believe it's 2 years), you must obtain your license within the specified amount of time or else, you would have to re-take it. Just like the TOEFL/TSE. ALways check with official sites, I say. You would never go wrong if its in writing. This is just a forum. Good Luck

5)Before a license can be issued, the licensee must have a social security number (SSN). The SSN is not required to complete the application process and take the NCLEX exam.

You can not get a SSN until in the US and a valid work permit. If you are still with Ca and haven't arrived in the US within 3 years and done nothing with your file then your file is deleted by Ca and that means you loose your NCLEX results. Much has already been written on Ca so suggest a search. The link I provided also tells you what you need to do as a foreign trained nurse and what is required
