Refresher course: do I need one?

Published

I have been in the OR since 1998. I did one yr of LTC in 1997. I am looking for a job but do not want to go back to the OR because I WANT nights and weekends since I have kids. I only want PT or casual.

I feel like I lost all my skills. I want to go back to a surgical floor (or LTC). I have not given an injection since 1997 nor have I done a dressing since I was a student.

I can do catheters, IV's etc.

I have not done insulin since 1997. Would a surgical floor hire me? Do I need a refresher? Anyone know of one in Toronto?

Why not work for a plastic surgeon in his or her office, or for an eye specialist?

Many of them have OR set-ups in their offices and need appropriately trained staff. Or outpatient surgery centers? They are closed on weekends and holidays.

I would hate for you to give up all of your training............

Do you want nights and weekends, or you do not want them?

Look at a trauma center for the nights..........quite easy to get a position..

Where in Ontario are you?

I WANT nights or weekends. That's why a plastic surgeon is not a good idea at least until the kids are older.

A big trauma center usually requires all new OR nurses to do a FT orientation for months. Another big reason I don't want to go back to a trauma hospital is the stress of the stat cases that occur on nights.

How about looking at even a smaller facility? Some have just one nurse on at night to get things prepared for the morning shift.

Several of the hospitals that I worked at had this type of position.

What ever new position that you take, it is going to involve several months of orientation. No matter where you go to, especially if it is in an area that you haven't worked.........similar in length to OR training.

Something in LTC wouldn't really require such a long orientation. CCAC that offered me a job was a 3 week orientation.
