Recommended Nursing Books

I am finishing up my pre-nursing courses and should be done by the end of the summer. I plan to take BIO 202 and BIO 205 in the Fall and then Pathos while I am waiting to be accepted in the program. With Mother's Day coming up (as well as other holidays throughout the year), I know my DD and husband will want to get me something and I would prefer to stick to nursing books that I can read. I was browsing the Barnes and Noble Nursing Section today and was wondering what would be some books to ask for? Any advice? I plan to ask for Saunders NCLEX for Mother's Day and purchased the Fluids and Electrolytes made easy along with Math for Nursing today. What else is recommended?

Thanks!

Angela

i don't start nursing school until the fall, but i've been a total nerd reading pretty much every post on this website gathering all kinds of information... the following books were all highly recommended.

- saunders comprehensive review for the nclex-rn examination

- rnnotes by davis

- med/surg nursing review & rationale by prentice hall (there is a whole series of these books, even a comprehensive review which may be more practical)

- kaplan's nclex prep book/study guide

- mosby's pharmacology memory notecards

- med/surg & fundamentals success by patricia nugent

also, someone mentioned getting a book stand, which i did, and it is amazing!! my back was killing me from being hunched over reading hours worth of pharmacology this semester.. and now i don't have to worry about it. the one i got is amazing, it is heavy-duty enough to hold my huge text books, and it has little page stopper things to keep the pages from turning/falling on their own.

this is the one i got: http://www.ibuytogether.com/product.php?productid=19&cat=12&page=1

shipping for this company is insanely priced though, so you could probably find something better if you search long enough..

hope i helped (:

YES! Thank you very much! You have helped and I do appreciate the recommendation of the stand.:D I will put to use that for sure! I am in the same mindset. I have lost total interest in my fictional books as well as TV. I just want to absorb as much nursing information as I can. I saw so many books I could get into at the bookstore, but I want to get what will be of most use immediantly. THANK YOU!!!!

You will most likely start off with med/surg, fundamentals, etc.. So one of those would probably be best to start with-- cuz most of the stuff in the NCLEX review books you probably won't understand for awhile.

I am the exact same way. If I do watch TV it's all my favorite medical dramas (Greys Anatomy, Private Practice, House, Scrubs, etc).. But as far as just sitting in front of the tv flipping channels.. I'd much rather be reading about things to expect in nursing school, etc.

There is also a great thread on here you should search for about nursing student 'vlogs'.. There are a ton of people on youtube who video tape their experience through nursing school. My favorites are ItzCecile and Hannahdemarco. Very informative, and it definitely gets you excited to start (:

My favorite book so far is between Culturally Competent Nursing Care, it goes in depth about each culture and how they expect care to be given, etc.

I am also loving Nursing Pharmacology Made Incredibly Easy, Pharm is the first class I have truly struggled with throughout school. This is def. helping breaking everything up into terms that I can understand.

This discussion has been very helpful to me as well. I will be starting an accelerated nursing program June 1st. It is nice to know that there are others like me. I am a total pre-nursing nerd who is absorbing as much as possible before starting my nursing program. I know it will be very tough, but hopefully if I can prepare myself a little before hand it will be that much easier to digest everything that will be thrown my way. Good luck to you all who are getting ready to start like me and thank you for those of you who are giving advice to help us newbies out. Keep the advice coming. :plsebeg:

Thank you so much! I can't wait to start collecting these books and reading them while I wait for acceptance into the nursing program!

I have to check out the vlogs!I bet they are filled with some useful information!Not that I need anything to add to my already excited and antsy desire for nursing!!!

Hi, I highly suggest Mary Hogan's Comprehensive NCLEX-RN, REVIEWS AND RATIONALES (big red book). If you have to take hesi the disk questions are very simular to hesi. I made it thru because of this book.

* Calculate with Confidence

* Nursing Pharmacology Made Incredibly Easy!

* RNotes

* Medical-Surgical Nursing (Lemone & Burke)

* Physical Examination and Health Assessment by Carolyn Jarvis....EXCELLENT book!

* Taylor & Sparks' Nursing Diagnosis Cards

* Mosby's Diagnostic and Laboratory Test Reference

* Taber's Cyclopedic Medical Dictionary

* Pathophysiology Made Incredibly Easy!

* Memory Notebook for Nurses (they have different volumes, but they're all fantastic! Definitely check those out)

* a good drug book

Lippincott Manual of Nursing Practice...it has everything you need.

Look at getting a nursing care plan book, you can find out what nursing interventions are needed for patient problems, it would definitly give you a heads up when you are caring for patients.

From a student a semester from graduation, here are the books I ACTUALLY GOT USE OUT OF in 2 years (the rest i've purchased and have hardly touched).

Essentials of Pathophys - Carol Porth I use this because it has actual pictures, not drawings, of problems and not to mention it says in a few paragraphs what my nursing book does in 30 pages.

Clinical Calculations - Kee actually really awesome math book

Pathophys made incredibly easy

Laboratory and Diagnostic Tests - Kee best purchase i've made so far, get it, it's worth it.
