Recently Hired at HHC advice needed

hi @ TREC96 I recently got hired at Harlem Hospital. I was told by the nurse recruiter i would get a call from HR. I wanted to basically know what the next steps are when HR calls you so i can be prepared. lol.. I would appreciate any info thanks

Congrats atwum! What unit were you hired on? Are you new grad? I recently completed the HR process at another HHC (KCHC) and it consisted of a Physical exam by a doctor and then a lot of paperwork for background check and verification of your degree, work experiences, and references. I takes about 3 to 4 weeks. Once cleared, you are given an orientation date.

Does anyone know how long does it truly take HHC to file all the paperwork from the moment of hire to orientation? I recently got the verbal hire at Harlem Hospital and I was reading it may take months before I get into the classroom? I am very concerned now. What do I do now? I am almost compelled to continue my search because the recruiter said that my unit wanted me to start the second orientation next month but I haven't gotten word yet of the physicals and all the other processing.

Hi penny,

It took 3 weeks from verbal offer by assoc dir of nursing to get call from HR to start the hiring process. This was at kings county. I think each hospital HR is different in their timeline. I heard harlem takes longer than most. There is no central HR for HHC, each hospital has their own HR and each works at different pace. You can call the person that gave you verbal offer and let them know you haven't heard from HR yet if its been more than a few weeks.

Hello! I work at an HHC hospital. From the time I got the verbal interview, to the time HR called me and I started an orientation it was about 2 1/2 months. Longgggg time. You can always keep looking in the meantime before they call you back. I know it's annoying, just be patient! :cool:

Thanks so much for the response and sorry for taking so long to reply! I appreciate it! I also have another interview with North Central Bronx Hospital this coming week. Have you heard of that hospital? I hear it is not bad! And by the way, how are you liking Kings County? I really like the appeal of the HHC hospitals. They have excellent benefits and they are welcoming of new grads.

Yes, I am still interviewing! I like the unit at Harlem that is hiring me but the wait is very long. I am hanging in there. Any info on NCBH? How are you liking to work at HHC?

NCBH is good, I haven't heard anything bad. The ones where people told me not to apply where metropolitan and woodhull. According to people that told me this, there is a lot of negativity/animosity among the employees there and not the best environment to start out in. HHC has hired a lot of new grads this past year as I observed at my orientation and heard from classmates hired at other HHCs. Kings County has a good orientation program and we were ready to start on shift after 2-3 months. I been on shift for a month and it is going well. Coworkers are welcoming and it is a team/cooperative environment. and Yes, as you said City hospitals (and any other city agency) are known for good benefits and being union friendly.

Thanks so much for the heads up estrella! Sounds great! Even if the wait is long, I am looking forward to starting orientation. I know that at least, I got hired somewhere while I still search. Other people have told me that NCBH is a good hospital too. So, we shall see what happens this week!

Please share your experience in being hired by HHC since from interview until medical clear. We might have the same nursing recruiter. I just had interview at Jacobi last week. Not sure I am going to be hired because it's very competitive. How long to know interview outcome? If I am hired, am I expected to do anything? For your case, how long did it take?

My hiring last yearned KCH was in this order: interview with Asst Director of Nursing, pharm exam, verbal offer by Director, contact by HR to do hire paper work and background check and physical exam and then official offer. I don't know if Jacobi has the same process, each HHC hospital may be different in sequence of hiring. I was a new grad BSN. The whole process from interview to hire took about 6 weeks. HHCs seem more new grad friendly than most other hospitals as I know most of my classmates hired in hospitals were hired by HHC hospitals.
