Really felt outnumbered today

Published

There are home care pts I've been shying away from because they're on home infusion pumps. Most of them I've never even heard of. I got sent to a class today at in infusion company. There were 11 of us, all in home care. We went around the room to introduce ourselves.

"I'm Molly and I'm with VNA."

"I'm Betsy and I'm with VNA."

"I'm Billy and I'm with VNA."

(I'm sinking lower and lower in my chair. )

"I'm Petey and I'm with VNA."

My turn.

"I'm Tazzi and I'm not with VNA......."

It's late and I'm sleepy, so maybe I'm missing something here. Why would you feel bad about not being with VNA? (if I were THEM, I'd have been a bit awed to be in the company of a nurse with 20 years critical care experience)

I was trying to be funny.......I guess it didn't work........

woohoo! I saw someone the other day at the grocery store with a PICC line and they had a pump that they carried around with them... I was trying not to stare, but I really wanted to see how it worked!?!? It looked like it was in a sling type thing. I didn't think it was a pump at first, but the tubing led right to it, so I'm guessing it was a pump of some sort.

Oh, and I thought of you when I saw it too :)

Probably a CADD; the infusion companies send a fanny pack or backpack (depending on the size of the bag infusing) so pts can get out of the house.

Now all I need is a class on wound care. I've never even seen a wound VAC, I wouldn't know what it was if it slapped me upside the head!

wound vacs are fun :) I did my senior preceptorship at Triumph hospital which specializes in wounds, etc. I did a lot of work with wound vacs, but I haven't seen one since then :( I think they do a world of good for patients with major wounds, especially for those that aren't healing. Don't let wound vacs scare you, they are easier than they look! Occasionally the company does in-services on how to use the wound vac... do some checking and see if there are any in your area. I was lucky enough to get to go to one during my preceptorship and it helped me a lot! Have you at least seen pictures of a wound vac?

check out that website...lots of good info about wound vacs :)

Nope. One could crawl across my foot and I wouldn't know what it is. I'm an old ER nurse.....my way of treating wounds was to wrap 'em and ship 'em! Now I've gotta know when to use duoderm, when to suggest a wound vac, how to measure tunneling, etc.
