Dick and Jane, huh? You'd think they'd come up with a better name than "Jane", then again, I can't believe they named a member "Dick".Then again...lol....I'm not so sure that was even a slang for member in the '60's.
:chuckle (I hope this is not violating TOS! It is, afterall, just a name.)
There used to be a movie called "Fun With Dick and Jane" (I believe it was a movie). It was a few of the students that came up with the name. No I didn't go to school in the 60's, it was in the 90's.
We did this in my nursing school 32 years ago. We were allowed to keep our underwear on. All I can say to you is if you have trouble having an "intimate experience" with someone you've known for barely a week, how are you going to deal with a patient you've just met 5 minutes ago? While I don't think it's necessary to do actual bed baths on each other I think there is an issue that you need to deal with--that is seeing people naked. It is very possible that you are going to observe a code blue where the patient is completely stripped while the code team is trying to save his life. You also need to prepare yourself for performing catherizations on both male and female patients. And, I am sure there are some experienced nurses reading this who have known of odd patients who delighted in exposing themselves to the nursing staff! Think about how you would deal with that if it happened to you.How you react to these situations is how you define your professionalism.
I dont think the OP was saying she is uncomfortable with seeing another person naked, it was the fact that she would be exposed herself to classmates. So let me ask you, do you strip down to your birthday suit when you meet your patient for the first time? UM I am guessing NOT because if you did you would be fired. LOL.
I tend to disagree. Professionism is not defined on whether or not you are willing to get undressed and be exposed to strangers.
To the OP I completely agree with you. There is NO WAY in H-E-double hockey sticks I would be getting naked in front of my classmates. If that is required I will refuse to do it regardless of the grade/passing. I have given birth 4 times now and I dealt with that just fine. Hey its a part of having a baby, but getting undressed and exposing myself to my classmates is NOT part of learning nursing, doing clinicals is! Period!
