Does anyone have any books that they could recommend to inform or inspire new nursing students? Anything you think are "must-reads"? Just curious...

I'm not sure if this will inspire you or make you run the other way, but I highly recommend reading Echo Heron's books.

I second Echo Herons books, they are all great!
I also liked The House of God: The Classic Novel of Life and Death in An American Hospital by Samuel Shem
Right now I am reading 'When the Air Hits Your Brain' and its good.
I have heard that the book, The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down by Anne Fadiman is excellent as well.
Echo Herons books are specific to nursing (and excellent) but I also enjoy reading books about the medical world in general.

This might sound silly but for short bursts of enthusiasm you might try. Chicken soup for the nurses soul. Not terribly deep but certainly motivating. I will check out these other books all of you have suggested. I do love to read and after graduation I just might have time once again.:)

well lets see there are a many i have read to keep myself going in nursing school. If you are thinking about the NICU i would say baby ER by Edward Humes. For general nursng there are many but i like... Life support by Suzanne Gordon, echo's books are great. For ER stories i like Emergency by Mark brown and just here trying to save a few lives by Pamela Grim. There is also how to survive and maybe even love nursing school by Kelli S. Dunham...which is great.
So there are tons of books and I sure a lot of the can be purchased used at half.com
Happy reading!

I was thinking of buying The Anatomy of Hope : How People Prevail in the Face of Illness by Jerome Groopman......has anyone read this one yet? There was an excerpt in Parade magazine a few weeks ago and it peaked my interest. Would love to hear some feedback from someone who may have read it!!

"Nurse" by Peggy Anderson was pretty good. Seemed a little outdated but it was a beautiful compassionate story of human life. It helped inspire me.:) Louisepug

I would also recomend "Nurse", very inspiring to a new nursing student (like myself). I enjoyed "Baby Catcher", which is about a Nurse-Widwife. I also just recently finished "Complications: A Surgeon's Notes on an Imperfect Science" and thought it was excellent. Not about nursing, but the patient stories and the look at the field of medicine itself are very interesting!

Actually, I have 2 books that I keep handy.
The first one was recommended by my instructor, and is awesome. It is NOTES ON NURSING: WHAT IT IS AND WHAT IT IS NOT by Florence Nightingale.
The second is ON CALL: A Devotional for Nurses by Lois Rowe.
