Re-taking prerequistes

Nursing Students LPN-RN

Published

I have a question for my aunt. She is an LPN and it's been over 10 years since her prerequisites. Are there any schools that won't make her retake them since she is a practicing LPN? Or are there any schools that require very few?

You need to tell your Aunt about this great site so that she can come aboard. I am sure she will love it once she joins. The only schools that I am aware of are the online schools like Excelsior. If she does not like online classes then I would suggest finding a CC which is set up on the quarter system. She would be able to fly through those classes in half the time. I know that many a LPN/LVN had has to re-take the dreaded A&P 1&2 and Micro; including myself in order to move forward toward the RN goal. GO LUCK AUNTIE, YOU CAN DO IT. :nurse:

I think some schools will not make you re take them as long as you've been practicing as a nurse and have already taken the classes once. I believe my school does it. You'll have to look around at other schools to check. Good luck to your aunt!

She's not very tech-savy!

Yeah it would be really nice to find a school that doesn't make her retake them. Are community colleges more likely to?

Most tech schools require that prereq's be less than 5 years old, especially for classes like A&P 1&2 and Micro. I am taking all again for the 3rd time since so much time has elapsed since I started this journey. Personally I think it is a good thing since even after a few years I have forgotten a lot and am really benefiting from the refresher. Also, since it is so competitive to get into most LPN-RN programs, it's a really good opportunity to get a better grade and increase my odds of getting acceptance into the program. Good luck to your Aunt in whatever path she takes!

Some schools don't. Mine did and it was a state school. She just has to do her research. Most common seems to be in the 5-7 year range.

My school took algebra and English comp 1&2 that was over 20 years old. However I think most schools want the A&P and micro to be less that 6 years old. Plus they will only take A&P from a different school if they were taken back to back at the same school.

I'm in the same boat. My school has a ten year limit on science classes, and I was unable to find one that didn't. I had to retake nutrition, micro, and A&P1 and A&P2. All other (non-science classes) will stand and don't have to be retaken.

The LPN-to-ASN transition program that I attended required no prerequisite coursework upon admission. Therefore, they could not apply a time limit to what they did not require in the first place. The only prerequisite was possession of an active, unencumbered LPN license.
