Hy Friends,
I would like to have some suggestions on my coming up project in the unit if possible. The project is about Oral Care in ICU Ventilated Patients which would also include Ventilated-Assisted Pneumonia.I would like to know what health practices do you guys follow in your units especially in ICU related to this topic. I have gathered alot of literature from several websites but I need real practices happening these days.
I would really appreciate if you all come up with some good suggestions.
Looking forward to hearing from you'll.
Happy Holidays.
Amyna Ahmed.

Strict oral care q 2 hours and prn with the Sage oral care products (I think it's a sodium bicarb mouthwash of some sort). Also, we've been taking part in a lactobacillus study. Lactobacillus down the NG and swabbed in mouth bid.

Hy,
Thanks for your prompt reply. I was just wondering which hospital do you work at? Moreover, do you have any further information on oral care in your ICU, like any protocol or checklist to follow (if any).
Thanks.

Thanks for your prompt reply. I was wondering if you could further elaborate on this Lactobacillus study and also which hospital do you work? Do you have any protocol or checklist to follow to give mouth care? If you have any literature or your hospital policy, please do share if possible.

Speaking from Australia:D
Where possible we use toothbrush and toothpaste TDS with peppermint water in between Q2h.
Other facilities use products ranging from sodium bicarb through to chlorhexidine mouthwash. Used as swabs Q2h - Q3h depending on the facility.
We USED to use a product made up by our state pharmacy called Thymol - it was a thyme based solution (thyme has natural antiseptic properties) but we are no longer using it - somone muttered something about "cruel and unusual punishment"?
Anyway could you also post any websites you have found so we may share information??

Our hospital did an ventilator bundle study. Not sure how the results are turning out. We used to do peridex but with the new study we have these tooth brush things, some come with a mouth moisturizer, some with toothbrushes and toothpaste, and then a third with a suction catheter. Its done every two hours here. I asked an ICU buddy what she thought and she said that she's see much cleaner mouths and WAY better breath from the patients, they seem to appreciate it.
