Hello! I have posed this question on the LVN forum and did not realize there was a separate forum for correctional nursing. Anyhoo, I have read some of the threads, but did not seem to find info on malpractice insurance for correctional nurses. Is this something that most of you have? If you do, is there any info that you can pass along such as website, etc. I looked into NSO and they do not offer to nurses who work in a correctional facility. I start my first day this upcoming week and any info would help. Thanks in advance.

Woolfpak,
I have been in corrections for 19 years and have never had malpractice insurance. I had it when I worked in the hospital and wasn't sure about how well my bosses would cover me in a lawsuit. Well I let it lapse when I started to work corrections. I don't know how it is in California but if an inmate tries to sue you, your lawyer is the attorney general and they will defend you unless you have done something blatent and no insurance company will cover you if you do something really wrong.
I think that if you have malpractice insurance, it would just make you more of a target by your clients...I just don't think it is necessary in our area to keep malpractice insurance. I was sued once and it was all taken care of and I never even went to court.

IMHO, having malpractice insurance doesn't make you any more of a target for a lawsuit than it would if you didn't have it. I have had malpractice insurance for 19 years now, and (knock on wood) haven't had to use it one time..... :)
I wouldn't work anywhere these days without some kind of malpractice insurance. Most malpractice insurance premiums are $100 or less per year, and IMHO, is worth every penny, even if you never use it. In the event that you are called into court over an error that resulted in a prisoner getting hurt, you will at least have some comfort knowing that a lawyer who is trained in these types of lawsuits will be working with you to resolve the issue, so that you will not have to pay any out of pocket expenses.
Here are a few more malpractice insurance places to try:

If there is no malpractice insurance, there is no lawsuit. Attorney's don't work for free, no matter how gross the error is.

If your employer decides you are not practiceing "safe nursing standards" and decides to contact state board of nursing, who you going to call to defene you??? malpractice insurance covers you for acts in the community, at work ann appearences before SBON. For $10.00/month, cheap investment to make.

Thanks for all the useful information. I would like to get malpractice insurance, but a lot of the websites I visited do not offer the insurance due to working in a correctional facility. Is there anyone who works in a correctional facility in California have it? If so, what company (website info) did you use

Wow, I am really glad I read this thread. I had insurance through NSO and I reviewed the website info and it looks like I am not covered when I am working in corrections. I don't even remember being asked if I worked in a correctional facility when I applied. I checked on proliability.com and it seems that they cover nurses that work in a correctional facility. I am going to look into that.
