Rates of Pay in OZ

I've been researching rates of pay in Melbourne, as I plan to move there next winter if everything goes okay. Although I am open to other parts of Australia too...the whole country seems so beautiful.

I have been talking to one recruiter (I know, I have big hesitations regarding recruiters), she tells me that as a grade 1, year 1 nurse, I'd make about $675per week. Then I went to this site:

http://www.wagenet.gov.au/WageNet/Search/View.asp?doccode=AW784047&doctype=AW&quickview=Y

which states that the minimum wage in OZ is about $15/hr.

I'm not going there to make big coin, but I'm just trying to make sense of this so I know what to expect.

$15/hr. on a 40 hour/week basis is about $600.

Does every hosptial pay differently? In Canada, every province pays differently, but the cities themselves pay a standard wage, no matter which hospital you work in. We also don't have private hospitals. So all this is kind of foreign.

It depends on your income and residency status. non-residents pay a higher rate, but do not pay the Medicare levy (1.5% of taxable income) or Medicare surcharge (additional 1% of taxable income for high income earners - usually around $50,000 p.a. - who do not have private heatlh insurance). If you're employed by a public hospital you may be able to package up to $8,770 of your salary; this amount is subtracted from your taxable income.

PS the Australian government in general, and the ATO in particular, have very comprehensive and easily navigatable websites :)

Hello,

How much is taken off in taxes for each pay? What are the tax brackets?

I'm from Ontario, Canada, and would like to compare the difference. Any information wold be great!

Thanks

It also depends how long you work for in Australia. I believe the longer you stay, the less you pay. It's quite a pay cut though to be moving from Canada to Australia...about $10/hr. Canadian! It would seem to be more about a choice of desiring the 'down under' experience, rather than the accumulation of $.

Hey!! You can't PUT a $$$ Value on the "Downunder experience":D:D:D

Thanks for the comments everyone.

After searching numerous websites I've realized that it's the experience that I'd be looking forward to, rather than the money. Because of this I don't think I will be moving down for a few years. In the mean time I can build experience, save for a house and when the time comes I can carry over my experience down there and start at a higher pay wage.

Thanks for all of the responses!

I am still interested in that downunder experience:)

Again, thanks for all the input.

Hi

As a new grad in a private hospital Qld, I was paid about $18.90 an hour and at a public hospital I think it ranges ferom $36,000 per year full time. Hope that helps. The graduate nursing programs are open now until April 12 if that's any help. Go to Qld Health website and it'll be up there somewhere
