Specializes in Operating Room (and a bit of med/surg).

Unlike most schools, we have choices as to what Med/Surg book to buy... (yes, we're "special")

I've got Black, Hawks & Keene: Medical-Surgical Nursing. I've found it to be a great reference. Things are explained in ways that are easy to understand, while at the same time providing enough detail that you can sound smart when telling your tutor what you learned! (ie- uses medical terminology!)

It's also got a CD and a website, but I haven't looked at either, and I've had the book all year!!

Some people got Brunner and Suddarth's but I looked at it and didn't really like how things were explained. But some people love it... just different learning styles I guess!!

Those were the 2 our profs recommended, but they said really, pick what you like... you're the one that has to use it!

Specializes in Perinatal/neonatal.

Good info but way too much. We never covered all the material. Study guide was extremely helpful, questions were very similar to exam questions. no CD.

We also use the "Iggy" book and I agree with your post! Donna Ignatavicius was also a consultant to our nursing program and I am wondering if that is WHY we use her text book because Bruner was used before the program changed. I have a Potter & Perry book that I LOVE! {To be honest, I use my LPN books a lot in this program...they seem a bit more to the point in the beginning and then I go further with the other texts.)

I think Lewis is a good book. I only used parts of it during Adult I (huge book!). But, it has been an excellent book to refer to when I have questions because it is so comprehensive. If you hold on to your books like I do, Lewis is great. I think I will be using it as a reference for years to come. Though I will add that Lewis is not exactly what I would call "light" reading.

Specializes in LTC, ER, ICU,.
