Rasmussen, stay away

Published

I just had to make this post about Rasmussen College. Specifically the Tampa/Brandon campus in Tampa, FL. For anyone who doesn't have money to blow I would advise you to stay far away from them. I attended one of their nursing information sessions at their campus earlier this year. I had decided that I would aim for their RN program. The first step would be to take their crappy entrance exam which you take at home. Then you sign up for the TEAS exam through ATI website. To take the TEAS at Rasmussen it cost me over $100 dollars total. The score I had to get was at least a 65 total adjusted score for their RN program, well I was like 5 points away. I hadn't had a chemistry class or math class in a while and I did not study long enough so no surprise there. They did suggest I consider their LPN program. I decided I wouldn't mind doing an LPN program first, but then I realized that Rasmussen was trying to charge me around 20,000 for an LPN program. Any nurse working in any of the hospitals in Tampa area will tell you they don't even hire LPN's anymore, they will only hire RN if they know you're pursuing your BSN. So I realized I needed to do my research and so I did. I came across Erwin Tech which is a non profit public school, they have a good reputation also and their LPN program is around 5,000 books, uniform, all fees included (oh and I also found out their teas test fee is only $45). So no surprise that I have changed my mind about Rasmussen and now trying to go to Erwin, I'm currently in the process and have come to a halt because Rasmussen decided to block my TEAS scores, which I really need to turn into Erwin so I can attend a mandatory meeting coming up very soon. The program manager for nursing at Rasmussen has been incredibly rude to me, I keep telling her I have no interest In going to their school anymore but she doesn't seem to get it she keeps on insisting I go and talk with her to review all my options which I am already aware of. She keeps ignoring the problem at hand. Don't trust for-profit schools like Rasmussen unless you are very well off financially you should just stick to doing it the traditional way. All they want is your money, the moment you change your mind about going there the claws come out.

I'm so sorry you had to experience this - but to be honest, it is not surprising. Commercial schools are focused on making a profit for their investors/shareholders. The more tuition/fees they can extract from each student, the better their profit margin. This is clearly supported in their business models, which indicate commercial schools spend waaaaay more on advertising and marketing than on faculty salaries.

Many well known commercial schools are set up as 'one stop shop' so that anyone that comes in to inquire about a program can be rushed through the application as well as signing on the dotted line for an ongoing loan -- before taking time to really understand the consequences of their actions. Students are 'automatically' enrolled in expensive classes -frequently without their knowledge - in order to keep the tuition money flowing.

You're wise to step out and take a more reasonable path.

ATI testing is an independent company that has nothing to do with Rasmussen, therefore, if you want your TEAS results you can go to the ATI web site and print them out yourself. I have taken the TEAS twice at 2 different schools and I just logged on to the site and viewed my scores.

Actually I did try to access my scores from a computer on their website at the other school I'm trying to go to and the nurse in charge of the program at the other school told me that Rasmussen must have blocked my scores. I called the ATI company and they told me they do have the ability to do that. The only way is to ask Rasmussen for my scores or pay ATI so that I can get a copy of my results.

Go erwin tech! Awesome teachers!
