Rampant Cheating

Published

Hi -

Just curious if anyone else sees rampant cheating going on at their school. I witness it in my Chemistry class all the time.

Its so lame. Adults pulling out cheat sheets and writing answers and formulas on their desks.

I am taking A&P I next semsester and when i asked around for Professor recommendations people said, "oh, try to take so-and-so, everyone cheats and gets A's".

Ummm...kinda scary. Correct me if i'm wrong, but wouldnt a nurse actually need to know some of the things taught in A&P to be a good nurse?

Anyway, my school is an ultra-competitive community college - something like 2,200 students trying to get into 120 nursing spots. Perhaps that is what is driving lots of people to feel they have to cheat.

Anyway, was just curious.

My best friend takes an lpn class and she called me crying talking about how people cheat their way through the class and she was really one of the ones trying. She said the teacher knew about it but there was nothing that he/she could do.I told her to just leave it alone and pray about it. That is what u are going to have to do. You just keep on trying. Things will get better.

She cries because she knows something needs to be done, she is pretty sure it needs to be her, and it is a new and scary experience.

Being the honest one takes courage. Looking away when you know something bad is happening is rather like not voting and then complaining about the election's outcome. It is hard, very hard, to "do the right thing." Not "doing the right thing" gets you the world we have today, in some ways.

If instructors are aware there is cheating going on and do nothing, they are part of the problem, and there needs to be a complaint lodged with the Dean of Students. Maybe she can do it anonymously. The first time is the hardest. After that, it gets a little easier, and most of the time the info is well received.

But if your friend does nothing, she will know that but for having spoken up, a slew of her inept, dishonest classmates will in fact make it into a world where they are responsible for vulnerable people, and where their colleagues really will not be able to depend on them. Not good.

She should do something. Support her in that. It will help her feel better about herself in a big important way.

Cheating is cheating, whether it is someone blatantly sitting there taking a test and using notes they have hidden or written on their desks or body, or using old tests and selling them. Even if it does have different numbers plugged in, it still shows the setup and gives the people what they need in order to better study, while the rest of us have to go in sight unseen and not really knowing what to expect..

Just keep in mind that not all schools consider keeping former tests and exams, cheating. This is the part that varies greatly from school to school.

Some schools that think it's cheating, fully support professors that are too lazy to come up with new exams each semester. The college my husband graduated from, when he pledged a fraternity, they were extremely open about the 'test bank' that they had, which the teaching staff was fully aware that some Greek organizations kept these. Thus, even more reason to give a new test.

The schools that don't think it's cheating, believe that it's part of their job to come up with new exams.

This happens at my school too. I hate it because I bust my ass to study to make sure I get good grades honestly and then these people who don't try at all cheat and sometimes get better grades. It's so irritating. It happened a few weeks ago and a group of my classmates noticed two people blatantly cheating and some people wanted to bring it to the teachers attention, others didn't

I would hate to have a nurse who had no clue of the body. If I saw the people who cheated as my nurse I walk away immediately.

Don't worry, you won't...those that cheat on exams won't pass the NCLEX. A RN degree from a college isn't worth the paper it's written on if you can't get a license to work.

It's a shallow victory.

sorry for the double post :)
