Raids on members causing high fever in nurse unions

California Nurses Association may be targeting University of Chicago after Cook County win

If there's a campaign map on the wall at the Oakland, Calif., headquarters of the California Nurses Association, the Chicago area must be ground zero.

Since winning away Cook County's 1,800 nurses from the Illinois Nurses Association, the independent union has linked with nurses at more than 20 Chicago-area hospitals with the goal of organizing a handful of them, union officials say.

One possible target is the University of Chicago Hospitals, where workers from the national organizing arm of the California Nurses have been talking with nurses.

They say they are only helping the 1,300 University of Chicago nurses, who belong to the Illinois Nurses Association. But they do not rule out an eventual organizing drive like the one they successfully staged at Cook County.

The situation is "reminiscent" of what happened with Cook County's nurses, confirmed Fernando Losada, head of Midwest operations for the National Nurses Organizing Committee, the national arm for the California Nurses Association.

Those hospitals had a LONG time to comply and they chose not to until the 11th hour had come and gone---hoping I am sure, the Gov. could put a stop to the new ratio laws. SHAME ON THEM----they had to take these desperate actions resistance to comply with LAWFUL ratios. I feel for patients inconvenienced by this---but not these hospitals/administrators caught up here.

And I agree; why live in a very pro-union state at all? The majority voted it in----you either live with that or you move on. It's really as cut and dried as that.

Or....

I fight the unions and their propaganda and filth and get the laws changed...

Tell me... how does it hurt the democratic process for me to expose unions for what they are? I mean, all it takes is one appeal at the right time and place and voila California is a right to work state!

What is wrong with me saying.."Ok, you want the union, and the union dues...let them bargain for you.., I'll decline, keep my dues and bargain for myself" ?

OK so fight. GOOD LUCK. I see a long uphill battle. Right to work is NOT ideal, either, believe me. I know, having lived in a right to work state myself. Give me a unionized hospital over a non-union shop ANY day.

Remember, the MAJORITY wanted this. Turn the tide, perhaps, but it will take a lot of time and a long fight. I personally would have better things to do with MY time.....like spending my increased pay thanks to our union. :-)

Rosa Parks...

She fought a LONG battle!

And you still didnt answer that question...

If unions are so wise and good, and for the worker, why won't they let the worker choose for themself?

I know a lot of people who will fight just as heartily the other way. Heck, they already have in the great state of California.

Blaming the workers for the problems of administration is anti-union rhetoric. Bad mouthing unions while enjoying the benefits of union employment is bad faith argument. If someone thinks 20 patients for 20 bucks an hour and 1 dollar call pay is a good thing then move back to a "right to work" state. I am a highly skilled nurse and I deserve quality pay, good benefits and job protection.

The workers DO have rights; and they do get to vote. A union is as good as the membership-----members who attend meetings and are active tend to get more out of their memberships and are thus, more satisfied.

To give Kevin his due, he has said he h as no intention of enjoying those benefits, nor becoming a member at all.

LOL enjoy it...

I mean it only costs 2.49/gallon for gas, houses only cost (my house 3 BR, 3BTH 1600 sqft) 450K....

Whereas, backhome same house 100-125K on 3 acres...gas bout the same (20 cents cheaper) taxes less, insurance less (health, home and car)..

and to answer your question about why I am here.. My wife is from California, born and raised... she loves the area, hates the politics (leftist/socialist) but the weather trumps the political aspects.

When she started working at the hospital it was non-union, which is one of the reasons she started working there.

Well if the weather trumps politics, then maybe you could just accept how things are and live with them? And use the democratic process when the opportunity comes around to change it? Just a thought.

And again she will have to accept the majority vote.....she does not like it, clearly. That is a shame. Like someone else said, majority vote does not ensure EVERYONE being happy. WE all know that living in the USA, don't we?

I agree...I get the same thing...all without the union. My job protection is my job performance. I make 25/hr and as well as performance/merit bonuses every year and I am only an LVN...I know, I am just a greedy capitalist right??

And why is speaking the truth...union plants/places cost more and therefore drive up costs...a bad faith argument?

Ford and GM are great examples...union plants and labor costs...prevent them from making a profit, non-union plants elsewhere contribute to the profit margin...hmm which is going to get axed. I know, I have a BSBA, but even non-business background folks should figure that out...?

and no, I am not a member...nor will I ever be...if it ever comes down to HAVING to take a union job or unemployed or employment in another field...see ya later!
