Racism in Healthcare ---

Published

I dont know if i posted this already but as an African American i am very upset at the way the professor gates was treated during his arrest in Cambridge Massachusets. Isn't it plain to everybody that the police were profiling Mr. Gates simply because he is a black man, especially that police officer named Crowley, clearly a racist. Not to mention the person that called 911 in the first place, clearly a racist.... Even our president said it was stupid, i mean come on where have we come in 2009 - I pray that our president, Barack Obama will continue to bring us all together during this difficult times caused by George Bush and as an African American, I find this whole situation disgusting and upsetting --

Leading into healthcare, it is plainly obvious that african americans are discriminated against under our current healthcare system, it is my sincere belief that once barack obama passes his health insurance plan this will be a thing of the past, lets all hope and pray that it passes through the government as quickly as possible so that true equality can be realized.

1) Perhaps you should listen to the 911 tape and decide for yourself whether the caller was racist instead of just listening to the media. She has been demonized yet didn't even say the intruders were black on the tape. She saw someone trying to jimmy a lock and called the police. What happened next was not her fault.

2) Are you saying the recession or that racism were caused by President Bush? I don't think either can be well substantiated but I am just trying to see where you are coming from.

3) You cannot just make a wild claim like discrimination in health care without backing it up with at least some proof or even a vignette. How are African Americans discriminated against under the current system? Are they denied care just because they are black? (no) Are they treated poorly because they are black? (no) Are they denied the ability to buy insurance because they are black? (no) Are they kept from trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle because they are black? (no). So how are the "discriminated" against?

Perhaps you can provide a source supporting your claims that African Americans are not discriminated against in the current system. There have been quite a number of studies showing that there are significant disparities in our system that affect services and outcomes for African Americans, even when the data is adjusted so that comparisons are only being made among individuals with comparable income, insurance coverage, etc. Here are a few summary reports:

https://www.CDC.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/mm5401a1.htm

https://www.aetna.com/health-care-reform.html

However, I don't see how this question relates to "Gates-gate." No, I don't think it's "clear" that the 911 caller and arresting officers are "racists" and I don't think it's "plain" that Gates was "profiled" because he's African American. I'm not saying that I'm sure those things are NOT true -- they're certainly possible -- just that I don't think anyone who wasn't there really knows what happened, based on the very limited information that has been released so far. And I think it was a mistake for President Obama to make such a strong, specific comment on a situation he knew nothing (or, at least, very little) about, although it's understandable, I guess, given that he knows Gates personally.

Returning to healthcare, I'm as big a supporter of healthcare reform as anyone, but, since the current racial/ethnic disparities appeared to be based on attitudes and beliefs of providers as much as anything else, I'm not sure that changes in healthcare funding or delivery are necessarily going to improve that situation -- the problem is a lot more subtle and complicated. I definitely share the OP's hope for a day (soon, I hope) of true equality in this country, however!

Gates was clearly in the wrong when you listen to the 911 tapes and read the arrest report. Obama was also wrong when he made his assumptions. But Obama didn't say or believe anything that Reverend Wright wouldn't have said. The so called beer summit is little more than CYA. Why was Biden there? Wasn't it just suppose to be the the President, Crowley, and Gates?

Huh? This post makes about as much sense as a football bat. I don't even know where to start.

Specializes in ER.

I think if a person is to be making claims accusing someone of something they should have cold hard facts and actual cases.

The OP's post is full of nonfactual statements and crazy accusations, I think if you are going to make the accusations give some examples.

Bush caused racism?? ALL the facts about the Gates case were wrong and the rest were assumptions more than facts. Just show a case were someone was discriminated against for health care because of race. Tie it to the rest of the craziness in the first post using facts and I would be very impressed.

If you're constantly looking for racism you're always going to find it.

troll -- this person started a whole 'nother thread about the gates incident and worked it up to at least five pages before it was closed!
