R there any more New grad orientation positions out there in DFW area?

Published

I was tricked! I was committed to my hospital. On May 15th and after having worked at this hospital for (1) year, I called HR to ask them when I needed to bring in my new graduate information so that I could get my pay raise I was told that the graduate nursing position that had been offered to me "did not exist" even though the nurse manager told me face to face that she could take a pt position and another pt position and put them together and create this position for me and that the ft position would "be no problem"? I did not search any other hospitals because I was confident of this offer. :angryfire I am now scrambling to find a new grad intership and of course they are all full now. I was told by one up front recruiter that most of the internships will begin on June 5th. What is the best thing for me to do now?

Specializes in OR Internship starting in Jan!!.

Wow, I don't have any answers, but that really sucks.

Good luck and I hope it all works out.

Specializes in Case mgmt., rehab, (CRRN), LTC & psych.

Next time (if there's a next time) always be sure to make the nurse manager put her promises in writing in the form of a contract.

Specializes in ICU, ER, HH, NICU, now FNP.

Put your application in at the other hospitals anyway - people do back out! Then call the recruiters and let them know you'd like to be considered if anyone changes their mind.

Also - call the unit manager of the units you want to work in and let them know the same thing and fax your resume directly to the unit.

I had an experience w/ this hospital before on changing positions and the "person" who commits up front is the nurse recruiter and the unit manager and then they turn it over to HR who makes "the formal" offer. Neither of the front end people make the front end offer. The HR person scribbles down lots of facts and figures and gets the applicant really excited, if you let them control your emotions that far, and then HR calls the individual on the phone and makes "the formal offer". I had no reason to believe that they would not carry thru after I met w/ the unit manager and she agreed to create this position for me. There was really nothing that I could have done short of being really rude and pushy w/ the HR person and the unit manager.

Thank you for this really sound advice! I went to my alternate (2) hospitals and asked for the skinny on how many grad nurse positions might still remain and the one hospital was honest and told me that there was nothing left, but would pass my name along. The other hospital nurse manager told me that she was not at liberty to say whether or not there were any grad nurse positions avail until I went thru the "formal" application procedure w/ HR. Needless to say I scribbled down the "formal" information very quickly. I am getting over the pain of the incident as the hours pass and realize the need to pursue other possible options quickly-just as you have advised me. Another hospital called back and said that they have (1) position remaining. I am filling out the necessary info online for that one now. By the way I called another nurse recruit that visited our school earlier and she was honest up front. She said that she did not have anything left. Thank you for offering some quality advice!

I would agree with gauge14iv...get your app and resume out there to anywhere you want to work. We just had a grad we were going to hire find out at last minute that she still lacked a class. People change their mind, or just don't show up. You probably can get in, but you will have to make the calls as well to the managers. Just be ready for last minute calls. GOOD LUCK to you, I think that you were definitely given a bad deal here.

Don't worry, I'm a cheapo, but I'd bet money you'll have an internship very soon.

Thank You WikkedCat for advising me to call the managers! This is something that I did not remember to do in my bout of anxiety. I am really hopeful about getting a job closer to home, than the last one was, at this point. I did get a call from a hospital yesterday. The call really helped to reassure my confidence in the process that nursing school = gainful employment. Yesterday was really rough b/c it was the 1st day that I did not report to work on a Thursday. All of the times that I juggled nursing school and work and looked forward to the day when I would not have to juggle both is finally here, and now I have no job! I am taking this time to focus on weight loss and studying for the NCLEX. I refuse to let this unfortunate, uncontrollable wrong destroy me and my self-confidence. Now is the time that I have to dig in deeper. :pumpiron:
