"Male Problems" while nursing female

How do you handle yourself if you have "Enzyte induced engorgement" while working with a female patient?

I had this happen once while working in the ER doing an EKG.

Does this happen to others? Help me out here.

Please don't say I'm not being professional or this isn't the job for me, etc. These things happen, I want to know how to deal with it (at that immediate moment)

I have a question for all of you that is along the lines of this thread. There is a woman whom I have started seeing romanticly. Her insurance requires that she come to the Hospital where I work if she ever needs it. She asked me if she was ever admitted to my floor (Med/Surg) would I be her Nurse. I jokingly told her that I wouldn't cause I didn't think it would be appropriete for her Nurse to be walking around with an erection. My question for you is, would it be inappropriate or a conflict of interest for me to be her Nurse, since we are becoming romanticly involved?

This post is NOT along the lines of this thread. The OP wanted advice about how to disguise an unwanted erection in order to maintain a professional demeanor and appearance.

It's difficult to take your question seriously. Your joking response to the woman doesn't help. If you truly do not know the answer to your inquiry, maybe you should pose this question to your supervisor.

My mom who was a nurse taught me how to bath a male pt who was young and might become aroused. She would tell them she was going to wash "as far down as possible and "as far up as possible" and that they could wash "possible" themselves and leave the wash cloth and basin with them. It has worked well for me so far.

Guys, a female pt is more inclined to be watching your face, rather than "you know what", it's just the way we are socialized.

And to whom it may concern, it is never a good idea to take care of friends or relatives when they are hospitalized. Better to be there for them in a supportive role when off duty.

I laughed my butt off when I saw that the only ones sitting after the video were the four male students. What a riot.

I know the topic begs for humor, but this guy asked one of those questions that you cannot ask in nursing school and which HAD to enter the minds of some of his male peers. I think knowing that the female patient would be unaware, as long as the nurse conducted himself professionally 100% of the time, had loose fitting scrubs with untucked top, and the nurse avoided ANY statement that could even remotely, even if stretched 1000 feet, construed as 'suggestive', is the answer.

I can honestly say in my +8 years of nursing I've never had an issue come up [pun intended] while taking care of a female patient. Not to say such an unplanned event has never ocurred, just not when taking care of patients. IMHO, it is about perspective & focus. Nonetheless, if such an even does arise [oops, another applicable pun] all a male nurse needs to do is finish the nursing task in a professional manner. As posted by female members on this Thread, most female patients are not fixated on a male nurses crotch. Therefore, just concentrate on the nursing task, get it done, then go away to allow your southern blood flow to head back north to your brain housing group.

Regards to the four male nursing students watching the breast exam video... are you guys still teenagers, LOL?

Actually, when I was in school a mere 9 years ago, this question did come up.

Also, how to do a bed bath on a male - let them wash their own "private zone".

As to taking care of friends, relatives . . better to let another nurse do that.

As to men still being teenagers . . . a friend of mine told me her husband hung that plastic "breast exam" reminder that women hang in their shower on his rear view mirror because the girl showing how to do a breast exam was "hot". He is in his 40's. :rolleyes:

I suppose I was being sarcastic about the men still being teenagers comment. ;) I think some men are able to be more discreet than others... LOL, don't think I'd hand such an item on my rearview mirror.

I definitely agree with the bed bath technique. When applicable, I have my patients [male & female] take care of their private personal hygiene areas.

I've had elderly male patients that were obviously disappointed whenever I first introduced myself that I'd be their nurse for this shift. However, as time passed throughout the shift all was good with the patient & I.

We absolutely have our patients do their own morning ablutions as a part of getting well and out of the hospital.

There are just some guys who won't take "no" for an answer - it is rare of course. So we only use our male nurses "rarely". :wink2:

Actually, I asked another nurse (female) to put in a foley cath for me due to the patient being a 17 year old friend of my sons who was like a son to me. It would have been too embarrassing for him and me.

Flexibility and teamwork are the keys to any good work experience . . .and I've drifted off-topic, haven't I? :rolleyes:
