"Flying Under The Radar"

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I have often seen posts of people who are already in nursing school, or ones who have survived it give the advice to "fly under the radar" while in school. I never quite understood what they meant until last night. I won't bore you with the details, but lets just say the CNA instructor aired her feelings towards a lot of people in the class. Thankfully, it was the last night...otherwise I would not be going back. lol I just find it odd that I haven't run into any other issues like this with Eng, Algebra, Psych, Bio, ect instructors that I have taken classes with. I made the comment half way through the clinicals that if nursing school is as catty as this CNA class was, I didn't know if I could make it through. Is it a nursing thing, or what?!?!

Yup, it is. I've never encountered the kind of treatment you describe in any other class in college. I kept thinking that it was where I went to nursing school, but too many others relate the same type of experience.

So just keep your head down, jump through the hoops, and get through it.

Best wishes.

Did she do this in front of the class?? I really don't care if this is just a nursing thing, that was very unprofessional of the instructor. Something like this should go into her personnel file, but I'm sure that would guarantee a person of not getting a spot in the nursing school.

My CNA class was also unlike any other classes I'd ever taken, except one other occurrence during a medical terminology class where the instructor just went ballistic, yelling and carrying on. It was so pathetic. The next day, though, she profusely apologized for her behavior. I start the ADN-RN program next week and I most definitely plan on "flying under the radar!"

I went to a part time evening nursing class, figuring that it would mostly be older more mature people (no offense to the younger crowd on here), and I was right. Most of us were in our mid 30's, some in the late 20's and some in the 40's, there were a few in thier teens but no matter what the age group it was always the same!! Is it a nursing thing or is it a female thing?? cause i know a lot of male nurses and they are in NO way as "catty" and dramatic as the women!! Hang in there!!!

The CNA course I took was the same...as well as a couple of my BSW courses. I believe it has something to do with the instructor trying to weed out the bad apples. Nursing (as well as social work) is a very demanding field (physiacally and mentally), and as grandma always says, "if you can't take the heat get out of the kitchen". The instructors of these courses are trying to prepare you for the "real world" not just get you through the class. Also take into consideration how many of these classes the instructors have taught and how many idiots they have had to deal with...I'd be catty too...LOL!

JMO, but I never had a good instructor who behaved like that. It was the good instructors who really taught me to behave and how to maintain my professionalism on the job, not Psycho-Teach, who only taught me to wonder which one of her psych meds she forgot to take that morning.
