Hello,
I am ready to apply to several accelerated nursing programs in Maryland which are from 13.5 months to 18 months in length. What is the best way for me to pay for living expenses (mortgage, etc.) while I'm going to school full-time. Will a school loan cover that amount (about $50,000) or do I take out a HELOC? I am a single person so I don't have another income to rely on.

hi...happy new year!!! From my experience, i quit my job to study nursing this school year 2006...unfortunately in one school i was interested, there is an age limit of 25 years old for the course...
This year, i'll be 26 and my application has been declined...have you checked schools for age requirements?
to study nursing requires not only enthusiam and time to learn but also finance...

I guess that would depend on how much your bills are... & what is a HELOC?
:uhoh21: An Age Limit?????!!!!??????? That is so rediculous, I don't have words- is it a private school?

I'm keeping my job (but going to part-time weekends) while in school.
However, finances are a stressor you DON'T need while going to school. Take the HELOC.... you'll feel better and interest rates are near their historical lows right now.
Age limit???? I think I'd file a discrimination lawsuit.

I had the option to go to an accelerated nursing program, I choose not to because I have to pay my mortgage, eat and pay bills. Rightnow, I will be starting a part time evening program, which will last 3 years. The good thing about that, I will continue to make a good income while I focus in school and not have to worry about when the next meal is going to come.
According to Maslow Theory, the second greatest needs is Safety after physiological, meaning you need a roof over your head before going to school.
Other options:
*Ask family members if they can support you for at least 2 years.
*Work two jobs now, and save money if can
*Move from a two bedrooms to one
Good Luck to you

Can someone please answer what is HELOC:D
I am also in Maryland and would like more info
thanx
Well, O.K., I looked it up on yahoo- It's a Home Equity Line Of Credit. So I guess you could just basically get a second mortgage...If you own a house.

The school loan will pay for books/ tuition, etc.- they usually will not give you money for living expenses i.e. mortgage/ food/
You can get a home equity loan without stating the reason you need the money.
You might want to try using a combination of both to finance your schooling.
Good Luck

I think the EOC would be interested to know this. How do they justify this normally illegal restriction?

Huh? An age limit? The average age of a nurse is 36!!! How do they justify this?

I hope someone notifies the EOC on this restriction! If the school accepts federal funds, they cannot discriminate based on age.
