quit my engineering career to become a CRNA

Published

Hello all,

I recently quit my job as an electrical engineer of 3 years to become an RN with hopes to become a CRNA. I am currently in an accelerated ADN and I was making A's in my first few classes but I haven't been able to pull it off in the last couple that I've taken. I made a 92 and a 91 when the cuttoff for an A is a 93 (so annoying)!! I honestly thought this little ADN program wouldn't be a problem for me, being a cocky engineer -- I have _definitely_ been humbled.

I know that there are only a small handful of CRNA schools that will accept an RN with a BS in another field (I am trying to avoid getting the BSN as much as possible). My question is, how realistic is it to get into CRNA school with 2 engineering BSNs (computer and electrical GPA = 3.38) and an ADN with hopefully at least a 3.5??? I'm just worried that having a low GPA in an ADN without a BSN will pretty much eliminate me from any chance of getting into a school. I realize that GRE's, letters of ref., etc., all are looked at too, but what kind of balance do I need among all these things???

Thanks for replying...

PS - the reason I didn't do a BS-BSN or BS-MSN program is because I would have had to take a bunch of pre-req's as engineering does not cover many of the basic life sciences that are needed for those programs. This would have set me back a year or more. The program I am currently in is a total of 15 months.

Hi singh,

I am waiting for my interview from barry. Did they call u for interview? whats ur gre?

Hi Jasy,

I did call them for the interview and they said that my experience is too limited to be selected for early interview ( I just have six months experience right now). they told me that they may consider me for the regular interview probably in June. My GRE is 1310/1600 and GPA is 3.84. what is ur gpa and GRE.

Hi singh,

Your numbers are very good. My GRE is 1040/1600. My GPA is 3.1. I work in CV ICU. Its been over a year for me in CV ICU. Good luck.

Jasy

hey Singh,

When did u take ur GRE? I mean how old is it? My Gre is 1040 440 verbal and 600 quants.

Hey Jasy,

I took GRE in december of 2003 when I was in India. I scored 580 in verbal and 730 in quantitative, essay 3.5. Originally I had come to US as a foreign student to study for MS. then I changed my plans and finished AAS in nursing.I work in Med/surg combined ICU. what other schools have you applied in? good luck to you as well.

Hey Singh,

I applied to University of New England and Samuel Meritt college. Did u try there? Actually Samuel meritt looking purely at numbers ie GPA (3.5) and GRE (1200). But BSN will give lot of options interms of schools, by the way I did the same thing as u did, I took my old GRE in 2002 in India, new one, I took recently cant believe that I scored only 600 in quants, ofcourse i didnt practice but still...I am In the same boat I quit masters in between. I understand ur mindset. If not this year I will get in by fall 2009.

Specializes in ICU, SRNA (class of 2010).

HI all

I am a SRNA currently, who was a computer software engineer as well. I was a consultant for qute a few years, and I quit that to become a RN.. I am now in my first year. 2 more years..

It is worth it... Just do it

PM me if you have questions

Hi Jasy,

I am currently applying in only those colleges who are starting their program in january of 2009. I f I don't get in I will look for the universities having their program started in fall 2009. Did you say that Samuel Merritt don't care about experience much and just look at your GPA and GRE? If that's the case I will go for it in next fall. Other big obstacle I am seeing in the future is cost of attending anesthesia school. have you made any plans about that? By the way where are you from in India? I am from Punjab.

Hey Whynotme,

Where are you currently attending CRNA college. Would you mind to tell about your GPA, GRE and years of experience when you were accepted in the program. how was your interview?

hey singh,

Did you hear anything from Barry? Did they call you for interview?

There ae some schools that you could do an accelrated BSN. One nurse I work with did it at University of Miami in a year. That creats a couple of problems. You are already in a program, and you will have limited clinical time, so once in the hospital it is a little uncomfortable. I would recommend working in the hospital as soon as possible. I came out of the navy with no degree, I was an electrician, and went through the navy's nuclear program. After I did 12 years in the navy, i got out June 2004. Started my prerequisites for ADN in January 2005, Graduate with my ADN, May 2007. RN in June 2007. Started my BSN May 2007. Will graduate this august 2008, and then start applying. My GPA now is 3.8, with a 4.0 for my BSN. You still need to do a year in ICU, and you can do your BSN really in 3 semesters. I did it in 4, but when i started in my tauma ICU. I was doing the hospitals critical care program, and new grad, and working nights. So I only took 2 classes that semster, and now only have 2 classes left this summer. So I would say work hard, and try to get your BSN. It might open more doors. Plus if you do not have it, from what I was seeing online, is that you will need to take extra classes during the CRNA program. I don't think you want to do that.

Hi, I have BS in computer science (1991, GPA only 2.75). But my ADN has GPA 4.0 Did you have interview yet from Barry? THANKS:D
