Hi there, I'm Mayelin and I am sooo happy I found this forum! Finally a place where I can get some answers!
Ok so, I am seriously considering going into Nursing. It's something I've considered doing for a while now, but always told myself I could'nt on account of me not being very good in math. Well, I decided I needed to at least give it a try so that I did'nt have any regrets later on in life. What I wanted to do was go for an Associates degree in Nursing (and eventually the RN exam). But I am concerned about the infamously long waiting periods one encounterds before getting accepted into these programs.
I live in NYC and am currently looking into applying to a few Community Colleges which offer the program... I meet pretty much all the "Pre-Clinical Requirements," have a GPA of 3.1 and have had good grades in the pre-clinical courses... Now these schools I'm applying to have pretty large enrollment sizes for the Nursing programs (they range from 14,000-19,000) so my question is, is it very unlikly that I'll get accented on my first try??? I'm 20years old, and feel like I've already wasted too much time at my current school deciding what I wanted my career path to be... I just want to start working towards it already, you know?
Also, in terms of Math and Chem.... can I make it in Nursing if I'm not that great at them?
I just want to thank you all beforehand! Really, I'm so excited to have found this place!

im not good in math either but i think you can make it. the schools that i applied for do not have waiting lists they do everything by a point system. they tally up the grades u got in ur pre req classes along with ur entrance exam that u had to take in order to be accepted and then they decided who gets accepted by who has the highest scores. Then i also heard in Cali that they put all applicants in the computer and randomly select them.but i dont think it would be to hard to get in on ur fist try if u dont then apply again and do cna or something to gain experince while ur waiting.

i'm 22 yrs old, and i got accepted to more than one school on my first try! so yes, it IS possible! i got straight A's in Chem, Micro, Anatomy and Physiology and some of the other prereq courses and i scored an 87.1 on the TEAS test. 3.9 prereq GPA and 3.2 overall. I don't have any of the supplemental criteria they ask for, like volunteer hours, work experience, low income etc. I am hearing that it is more difficult to get accepted to a ASN program than a BSN program because they are more affordable and some have less requirements than the BSN programs. I got accepted to one ASN program of the two i applied to, the one i did not get accepted to was 100% lottery! bummer! I also got accepted to CSU Los Angeles and am wait listed at Sac State and CSU Fullerton. Rejected from CSU San Marcos, and SF State. Math and Chem were hard for me, but i managed A's somehow! Good Luck!

The only thing you can do is apply and work your butt off. Apply to as many schools as you can and get on the waiting lists if need be. You are young and you do have time, but be a go-getter. IF you go on a waiting list, take some classes that you might be able to transfer to the BSN program. It will benefit you in the long run, especially if you want to go on later. It's good to have those classes done and behind you. Good luck.

I am 28 years old and I just applied for nursing school after being laid off from my job beginning of this year. It was my first try and I got accepted! Like a previous post, our community college based everything off a point system based on your previous GPA, classes taken, whether you had a degree or not, and the pre-entrance HESI exam. Some other factors went into it as well, but I was very surprised I got accepted my first shot cuz I had heard so many stories of how people wait for years to be accepted. Just depends on the school and their acceptance criteria and how many people apply.

math is not my best subject either... i struggle with it.
i'm 22, just applied for the RN program out here and got accepted on the first try. my school bases admission on pre-requisite completion and scores on the PAX-RN. that's it!
my only advice is to find out what is required for each school and plan wayyy ahead! some require testing scores but the tests aren't administered many times a year, some may require lots of pre-reqs and co-reqs would help if they use the point system.
don't talk yourself out of trying. you might feel like you aren't very good at something, but many people may be way worse in comparison, know what i mean?
good luck

Just because you are not good at math doesn't mean that you won't be one day. If you have a deficiency in something, it is up to you to rectify it. No one else can and by saying over and over that you aren't good at something won't change that outcome.
Register for a beginning math class. Then keep on going up the ladder until you have it.
I am deficient in math myself. I am working this summer through a basic math book for the review then next year it is math, math, math and more math for me. At the end of next year, I will be able to say, "I'm great at math. Need help?"
You are young so you have plenty of time. I did well in Chemistry without a big math background but it was harder for me than others because I had to really work at all of the conversions. It can be done though. Basically you have to learn whatever math you are doing along with the chemistry.
This is a good life lesson though. If you don't know it, learn it! Always try to better yourself and not just get by.

Work really hard with those pre-reqs!! I don't mean to scare you, but I actually didn't get in on my first try, but I was SO close. My school admits students based on their pre-req science average - when I applied, it was microbiology & biochem I & II (now it is biochem I & II and A&P I & II). They average out all of the grades and then decide who to admit based on that average...I was placed on the waiting list and I missed the "cut off" by .01 of a point!!! I was really close on the waiting list to but either no one dropped out or not enough dropped out because I never made it into the program I retook two classes to bring both B grades up to A's to make sure I would get in (by then my science GPA average was a 3.8) and then I was admitted :)
You will never know until you try :) Oh, and I am THE WORST AT MATH and so far I'm doing great. I had to pass an IV math calculation test with a 90% or better without the use of a calculator...and if I can do that, anything is possible (trust me!) Good luck! :redbeathe
