Question about working at Hospital-based nursing school

I am currently a first year pre-nursing student. I work as a Nurse Tech at a local hospital that also has a nursing school that I am hoping to attend in Fall 2008. I have an interview with an ICU unit (where I want to work) at a different local hospital this coming week. I have not been admitted to this nursing school yet but I had great grades in high school and I am keeping that up while in college. My mom is worried that switching hospitals will affect my chances of getting into the nursing school, but I don't think it should affect it. I am more interested in working in the ICU as that is where I want to work when I graduate from nursing school, and this hospital pays better too. There is no opening in the ICU at my current hospital and I emailed the supervisor there over a month ago saying I was interested if there was an opening and I never got a response. Should I go ahead and take the job in the ICU at the new hospital if they want me?? Thanks!

Many times hospitals (and other places) hire from within first. However, I'm not sure how the nursing school would handle this situation. Your mother has a good point, but at the same time, you will still be employed by a medical facility gaining great experience! You need to do some investigating.

Does the nursing school go by GPA? Does the nursing school go by an entrance exam only?

Maybe ask around your hospital. Don't let on that you are planning on quitting, just ask if employees are given first dibs on being accepted into the nursing program.
