Question about working in Aberdeen after completing Diphe at RGU

Hi there,

I'm basically just looking for some information.

My sister is in her 3rd year at RGU in Aberdeen, has passed all of her exams/essays/placements etc (with a 6 on her last community placement) and graduates in December. Her last day of uni is this Friday and she has to move out of the nurses home she has lived in for the past 3 years at the beginning of September. Anyway... She called me last night crying because she hadn't "made it" into 1 of 3 groups which decides how likely it is that you will get a Job within Aberdeen. Group 1 being highly likely to get a job and group 3 meaning that you haven't a chance in hell! What exactly does this mean as I really don't understand it all. (Doesn't help that she was too upset to explain everything in detail) She said that she has to complete a 6 month course before she can apply to work in Aberdeen and this "group" thing was to get her on to this course.... What exactly is she supposed to do now? Does anyone know what her options are? I don't believe that after 3 years of training she is being 'dissed' by the city she loves and wants to work in. After all if she wanted to work in glasgow, she would have studdied nursing there!

When I qualified almost 6 years ago from the UEA in Norwich, we all went for Job interviews following our completion of the course and you either got a job or didn't. (Everyone I knew got one) I just can't understand why Aberdeen would make up this silly rule.

If anyone can explain this to me, please do.... I'm sooooooo confused :scrying:

Thanks x

Hi there

Has she completed her training in adult or kids? I trained in Aberdeen but decided there wasn't scope to progress quickly so decided to move back to Glasgow! As far as im aware there isn't many jobs left in Aberdeen but it's no excuse because people who trained at Aberdeen should get interviewed first.. I'd be interested to know what the outcome of this is!

I just don't understand this at all... surely if you pass your course, you should be afforded the opportunity of at least applying independently and selling yourself on your application and interview?!?! I've never heard of colleges deciding on who should get the chance of interview, that's just mad!

I didn't train in Scotland (tho I'm from Glasgow) and I know the entire training system is different to ours, but still... everyone should be given a chance on their own merits, so you'd think!

Can your sister arrange a meeting with her personal tutor to find out what happened?

Best of luck to her, I hope she gets the job she wants in the end.

It is quite hard to get a job in Aberdeen Royal Infirmary or Grampian NHS. I studied at RGU and graduated last March 2004. I applied to Aberdeen, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Newcastle. I moved for my first job as did quite a few of my classmates, Aberdeen's loss! I basically think that RGU is training so many nurses (2 intakes per year) that just cannot be absorbed there. Plus they are employing"' highly qualified'" staff from other countries. I do wish yr sister all the luck.
