Question about taking the NET

U.S.A. Michigan

Published

I took the NET today at HFCC, needless to say I did not pass on my first attempt. I didn't get to finish the reading portion. I realize now that I spent too much time analyzing the paragraphs when I should have been more focussed on doing them quickly. I missed the math by one point also. Has anyone had to take this test more than once and if you did how did you prepare for it the next time. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Lots of people take the NET more than once. That you failed both sections indicates you have some brushing up to do.

Did you prepare? Did you get that little blue and white book? Work that book inside and out, as it has the exact type of math that you need to know for the NET. The math on the test is 6th grade math: percentages, ratios, fractions. You really need to know it. Plus, the time allowance on the math portion is very generous, allowing you to recheck your questions if needed.

The reading portion: more difficult because time does run on out you, darn it. You really have to know what to look for in those paragraghs. The little blue/white book will define the different terms for you - inference, main idea, etc., so that you will start hunting immediately for the correct answer the questions asks of you. HINT: always skip down to the question before you read the paragrah; that way, you can subconsciously look for the answer as you read the selection the first time.

I also believe you have to be interested in the topic that's given you, and you certainly can't prepare for that. The first time I took the NET, I had the habitat of owls. Good grief and all that's good. The second time, infection control. Hello?! Loves it!!

Get that little book - HFCC should have it on hold in the library, or buy or borrow it for really in-depth study - and know it inside and out. That's how you will excel on the NET.

I hated taking that bloody test. Good luck to you. HFCC rocks.

Thanks for the advice. I do have the study guide that the book store sells, it's called The Net Study Guide, A Review for the Nurse Entrance Test. A white cover book with kind of purple lettering, three people on the front. I think it's the one your talking about. It's the one I was told to buy. I did study and I thought I was prepared, I just must have gone about it the wrong way. That, and I think nerves got the best of me. The timing on the test adds extra pressure, at least for me anyway. I know alot of people take the NET more than once, I just don't see any posts on this site from people that do. Everyone on here makes it sound like it's easy to ace. I will take your advice and really learn what to look for in the reading, I know I spent too much time analyzing for the right answer. As for the math, I know it's not hard and I can do much better on that too. It sounds like the test is different each time you take it. Is that true?

The reading selection is different each time you take it. The math stays about the same - no harder than what you saw the first time.

The timed questions add to the stress, no doubt about it. It sounds that you are ready and willing to work on that little book - good for you! Just take the advice in the book and study those examples over and over so that you can get right down to work when the reading portion begins.

Additionally, there is a study section in the HFCC learning lab that people have found useful. Does anyone know that link to help this future nurse?

I think this is the link. Good luck!!

Don't get down on yourself because you didn't pass the first time around. These tests are NOT designed to be easy and anyone who tells you otherwise is either: (a) a liar or (b) a pretentious jerk.

When I went to HFCC and got info about their program, I was given a packet about different study labs that you could go to at HFCC where they will help you study for the NET. Unlike most schools, HFCC seems like it really wants their students to succeed, and they are willing to do what they can to help you out.

My packet was printed on salmon-colored paper, and it had dates and times of when the labs were open. Also, if you have a learning disability, you may be able to get extra time or other help on the test. I'm not 100% sure about that though, so you should check that out as well.

Definitely go to HFCC and study there. If you tell them where you didn't do well, I'm sure they will help you focus on those areas so you can do better next time :) Good luck!

When i took the NET, I used the website link. I printed out the stories, and timed myself on reading and answering the questions. I think they have a couple different stories. I made sure I could do it in the 30 min. time frame. I also practiced the math a bunch. The day of the test get there a little early and relax. do not stress about it. take a deep breath and tell yourself you can do this.

Tonyal, thanks for the suggestion. I know I have to work on my time for the reading. I have the website link, if I remember right there are almost the same amount of questions as there is on the test. It's just a little nerve racking when I think about it, to read and answer in about a minute. Did you actually finish the reading portion or did you get far enough that your score was decent?

I did not finish the reading, but i was far enough to pass. so if I was to do it again i would have built my speed up. just dont psych yourself out. you can do this and will be in the program before you know it.
